Domaine du Château de Meursault : Pommard 1er cru "Clos des Epenots" 2016

Part of the clos located on the Beaune side, very seductive, floral, elegant. Beautiful balance. Charming in its elegance.

Structured by abundant yet supple tannins, this wine shows notes of black berries, licorice, and fresh coffee.

Rich, featuring cherry and spice flavors. The oak treatment adds an extra layer of tannins on the finish. Showy, but needs time to integrate. Best from 2022 through 2035. 50 cases imported.

The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and blue fruit on the nose, floral with hints of pressed violets and iris, quite pure and showing very well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent tannins that insistently grip. Just a slight chewiness toward the finish, yet there is a satisfying degree of elegance and poise throughout this Pommard. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The nose is elegant, indulgent, finely tight-knit, well handled, and offers concentration as well as juiciness/juicy fruit. The wine benefits from decanting. We find notes of ripe/fleshy plum, fleshy blackcurrant and, more subtly, violet, together with touches of Sichuan pepper, hints of red fruit, graphite, as well as fine hints of cardamom, spices/toasted notes and nutmeg. The palate is fruity, juicy, balanced, well handled and offers good definition, gourmandise, lovely juiciness, lovely precision, tension and a good guideline. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fleshy cherry, fleshy/juicy plum and, more subtly, fleshy/juicy raspberry, combined with touches of small fleshy/juicy red berries, flowers, as well as fine hints of graphite, licorice and a very discreet iodized note (in the background). The tannins are elegant, well handled and slightly firm. Good length.
