Decanter

Faiveley’s half-hectare of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet was acquired in 2008 as part of the acquisition of Domaine Monnot, engineered by Erwan Faiveley and then-CEO Bernard Hervet. Running the length of the vineyard downslope from the ex-Monnot parcel of Bâtard, it delivered in 2022 a wine of great elegance, with ripe pear and marzipan fruit and abundant floral notes. The texture is rich without being heavy, and the finish lingers invitingly on the palate. This wine will open nicely in three to five years and should drink well for decades.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Faiveley

Tasting

Appearance
The glass reveals a pale, limpid yellow hue adorned with delicate green highlights.

Nose
The bouquet is complex and beautifully refined. It opens with aromas of white and yellow fruits, such as fresh pear and nectarine, underscored by floral notes of acacia and orange blossom. With aeration, hints of fresh brioche, hazelnut and subtle toasted nuances emerge, rounded off by a delicate touch of honey.

Palate
The attack unveils a full-bodied, structured texture while retaining a lovely sense of restraint. The rich texture is perfectly balanced by refreshing acidity. The palate expresses flavours of stewed fruits, candied lemon and white peach, supported by a chalky mineral backbone. The finish is long, lively and harmonious.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Grand Cru, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. Aeration of 15 to 30 minutes is advised before tasting. Accessible today, this wine has the structure to evolve favourably in the cellar until around 2037.

Food and wine pairings

This white wine pairs ideally with seafood and shellfish, such as lobster thermidor, scallops with beurre blanc or grilled turbot. It also accompanies poultry in sauce beautifully, such as poularde with morels or blanquette de veau, as well as aged cheeses like Comté or Brie de Meaux.

The estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is a historic institution of Burgundy. Now led by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, who represent the seventh generation, the estate oversees a vast vineyard spread between the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Combining respect for tradition with the modernisation of practices, the estate has committed to a strong environmental approach, with the complete conversion of its vines to organic farming.

The vineyard

The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is a prestigious appellation located in the commune of Puligny-Montrachet. The plot cultivated by the estate was acquired in 2008 and is home to vines planted in 1980. Sitting at an altitude of between 240 and 250 metres, this terroir enjoys an eastern exposure. The soils are composed of brown limestone mixed with clay, offering favourable conditions for the vine under a temperate continental climate.

The vintage

The 2022 season was marked by particularly hot summer temperatures. A welcome stormy episode at the beginning of June brought the necessary moisture to the soils, thereby preventing water stress during the growing period. These weather conditions favoured optimal ripening, yielding healthy grapes at harvest.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes intended for this Grand Cru are hand-harvested and then rigorously sorted before a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, with a generous proportion of new barrels, over a period of four weeks. The wine then benefits from 18 months of ageing on lees, accompanied by regular bâtonnage to lend it greater complexity and texture.

Grape variety

This wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
