Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

A certified organic and biodynamic blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2018 La Clape Chateau L'Hospitalet Grand Vin delivers glorious aromas of garrigue, blackberries and black olives on the nose. It's full-bodied and concentrated, with creamy-velvety tannins that effortlessly support the mass of fruit, and boasts a lingering finish spiced with salted licorice. It's a terrific effort for drinking over the next 10 years or so.

Decanter

Faintly floral and fruit-forward, this has a really expressive nose—full of life and charm. Cherries, blackcurrants and blueberries combine on the palate, so juicy and lively with great acidity and overall balance. Fresh and vibrant with softly gripping tannins and a drive of fresh, clean fruit alongside a wild, herbal garrigue character. It also has a smoky edge and sides that are so appealing and distinctive. Elegant and enjoyable, but still a baby with plenty of life ahead.

Jancis Robinson

Syrah, Grenache and 10–20% Mourvèdre. Maceration of 25–25 days, aged for 12–16 months in barriques with occasional stirring. G B describes this as ‘a destination winery’, where he holds a summer jazz festival and there is a restaurant, etc. La Clape was an island and Narbona (Narbonne) was the capital of Gaul. Very distinctive flora on this vast property. The 2017 was celebrated by the International Wine Challenge. Very heady, ripe nose with some black-pepper notes. Big and bloody with some salty Syrah notes and also the spiciness of Mourvèdre. Very luscious indeed. Lots to discover here. Exciting and energetic rather than fat. Good lift. (JR)

La RVF

In La Clape, l'Hospitalet is a safe bet; this silky 2018 finds its balance with notes of damson, spice, and a finish of black fruits.
