This great Chateauneuf manages to square the circle of dark aromas like tar and dry earth with freshness that’s rare for this hot and dry vintage. It’s juicy and elegant but also subtle, with a very fine texture. A long, velvety finish with a delicacy that pulls you back for more. A cuvee based on old-vine grenache. Drink or hold.

Medium-deep garnet red colour. Pure and layered nose, complex with notes of fine leather, tobacco, cedar wood, garrigue, ripe cherry, cassis, and roasted black pepper. The palate shows good density and volume, finely rounded with refreshing tannin, nice grain and polish, with sweet fruit flavours, balanced by vibrant bay leaf and mint notes. Warm and ripe but with well-kept freshness and a long, powerful finish.

Description

Tasting notes for the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge from L’Oratoire des Papes

This wine captivates with its tannic backbone, finesse and elegance. Notes of red fruits and spices mingle harmoniously through to a delicious, mouthwatering finish.

The refinement and aromatic expression of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine

The estate

Named in tribute to the oratory located at the foot of its very first plot, L’Oratoire des Papes has symbolized for nearly 150 years the balance between pleasure and prestige. In a contemporary, very pure style, the House showcases the expression of the four major soil types emblematic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Wines renowned for their elegance, well beyond the appellation itself.

The vineyard

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation stands out for the exceptional diversity of its soils, shaped by three major geological eras: limestone fragments, rolled pebbles, safres and red sandstone. Respecting this mosaic of terroirs, the estate favors an approach inspired by organic farming and low-intervention winemaking in order to preserve the identity and singularity of each origin.

Winemaking and aging

Part of the harvest is vinified as whole clusters, with a proportion of stems adjusted according to the vintage. Co-fermentation of the grape varieties is systematic, to gain in complexity. Fermentations begin around 19–20°C, then evolve between 25 and 32°C depending on the year. Extraction, carried out mainly through small pump-overs and extended macerations, seeks infusion rather than mechanical power. Aging continues for 12 months in truncated-cone French oak vats, followed by an additional 8 months in concrete vats.

Blend

This Rhône Valley wine is a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre.
