Appearance

The wine displays a deep ruby-red color with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting its development and phenolic maturity.

Nose

The bouquet is remarkably refined, revealing aromas of cranberry and bergamot, enhanced by subtle woodland notes. Floral nuances of violet and rose gradually emerge, while the oak aging integrates elegantly without overshadowing the aromatic expression.

Palate

The palate is medium-bodied, carried by a pronounced acidity that brings clarity and precision. The tannins are fine and elegant, offering a silky, supple texture characteristic of the appellation. The palate reveals ripe red fruits, mineral notes reflecting the limestone terroir, and delicate spices from aging. The finish lingers beautifully, harmoniously combining fruit, minerality, and spice.

Food and wine pairings

This Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 pairs perfectly with white meats in sauce, notably rabbit with grapes or poultry with cream and mushrooms. It also complements roasted game birds such as pigeon or grouse with elegance, as well as aged firm cheeses.

The estate

The Domaine Pierre Damoy was established in 1922 in Gevrey-Chambertin by Julien Damoy, a pioneer in the modernization of French food retailing and a passionate wine lover. Since 1992, Pierre Damoy, representing the fifth generation of the family, has managed this roughly ten-and-a-half-hectare estate, with nearly eight hectares classified as Grand Cru. The estate stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, replacing synthetic fertilizers with mechanical soil work and natural compost. Pierre Damoy favors an approach that respects the terroir, viewing soil health as fundamental to producing exceptional wines that fully express their Bourgogne origin.

The vineyard

The Chapelle-Chambertin benefits from an outstanding terroir characterized by clay-limestone soils rich in limestone. Domaine Pierre Damoy controls nearly half of this appellation, with around three hectares spread across four lieux-dits: Grande Chapelle, Panama, Travers, and Les Quatre Ouvrées. The vines, some planted in the 1920s, thrive on east-facing slopes, enjoying morning sunshine and afternoon shade that encourage balanced ripening. The appellation takes its name from a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de Bèze, built in 1155 by monks who had already recognized the exceptional quality of this site.

The vintage

The 2014 vintage in Bourgogne was marked by a cool, wet season, leading to slow grape ripening and late harvesting. These conditions required particular attention to determine the optimal harvest date, making it possible to achieve full physiological ripeness. Despite these climatic challenges, the vintage ultimately produced wines of exceptional finesse and precision.

Winemaking and aging

The Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 grapes were harvested by hand and carefully sorted to retain only the healthiest fruit. Vinification took place in open wooden vats with regular punch-downs, allowing for an extended maceration of around four weeks to build tannic structure. Aging lasted between eighteen and twenty months in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new barrels balanced by barrels that had held one or more wines, thus preserving the terroir’s delicate character without masking it with excessive oak.
