Decanter

A strong burst of violets and peach comes out of the glass, then on the palate it's explosively flavoursome, a concentrated but fresh and intense Condrieu with great intensity, huge length and massive amounts of pleasure. Great salinity, concentration and freshness suggest a long life. Fermented and matured for 12 months in large, old oak barrels.

In conversion to organic. Tasted blind. A slight creamy note on the nose behind white flowers and pear skin. A sense of sweetness on the palate, vanilla and custard with pear skin on the ripe, warm finish. Dense and powerful—yet it also has a nice sense of energy to lift it. One for those who like powerful and rich Condrieu. (AC)

The 2022 Condrieu Jardin Suspendu is, as usual, a strong effort. Wafting from the glass with aromas of jasmine, white flowers, spring flowers and honeysuckle, it's medium to full-bodied, sappy and round with a rich, perfectly balanced core of fruit enhanced by subtle oaky notes and some freshness in the mid-palate, leading to a long, ethereal and racy finish. Crafted from vines planted on granite soils, this is a harmonious, clean wine.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Pierre-Jean Villa's "Jardin Suspendu" 2022

Tasting notes

Colour
Bright and luminous, it reveals a beautiful golden hue.

Nose
Intense and complex, it opens with a floral bouquet marked by jasmine, honeysuckle and spring flowers. Secondary aromas of lychee and quince, along with subtle hints of vanilla and delicate spice, add further depth to this olfactory palette.

Palate
Full-bodied and richly textured, it offers beautiful fruit intensity supported by a fresh backbone in the mid-palate. There is a remarkable balance between the generosity of the fruit and subtle oaky notes, leading to a long, elegant and airy finish.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs wonderfully with delicate fish dishes enhanced with citrus or aromatic herbs, as well as with mature goat cheeses. It is equally well suited to poultry in creamy sauce, a seafood risotto or a chicken and apricot tagine. It is just as delightful enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.

Service and storage

For the best tasting experience of this 2022 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. Allowing it to breathe for fifteen to twenty minutes in the opened bottle will help reveal its full complexity. This wine can be enjoyed now and will keep until around 2027.

The floral and balanced expression of a Condrieu white wine

The estate

Founded in 2009 by Pierre-Jean Villa, the estate was born from a genuine passion for the terroirs of the Rhône Valley. Starting from almost nothing, this winemaker has built an estate that now spans 20 hectares of vines. Currently run by Pierre-Jean Villa, recently joined by his children Hugo and Pauline, the estate stands out for its deep commitment to sustainable viticulture. It favours innovative practices, such as agroforestry, to bring out the authentic expression of its wines.

The vineyard

The vines destined for the Condrieu "Jardin Suspendu" thrive on the appellation's steep slopes and terraces, spread across the villages of Chavanay and Vérin. This roughly two-hectare terroir, facing due south, rests on granite soils crossed with clay fissures. Farmed according to organic principles, the vineyard benefits from natural grass cover and a rigorous massale selection to preserve the site's identity.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by notable earliness, beginning with an exceptionally cool and particularly dry spring. From mid-April onwards, a significant rise in temperatures encouraged a rapid and even flowering. Despite an intense summer drought, timely rainfall in July and August allowed the vines to continue their growth cycle optimally through to the harvest.

Winemaking and aging

Whole bunches are harvested and then pressed in the traditional way without destemming. Fermentation is triggered naturally by indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for around twelve months in large 600-litre wooden barrels known as demi-muids. It is bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
