Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the "Carmina" 2023 by Pierre-Jean Villa
Tasting
Colour
This Vin de France reveals a deep ruby red hue, adorned with subtle brick nuances.
Nose
Subtle and refined, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of dark fruits such as cherry and blackberry. It is then enriched with spicy touches of white and black pepper, enhanced by a lovely minerality.
Palate
Combining power and elegance, the palate offers a fleshy texture supported by round tannins. The finish, of impressive length, stands out for its liveliness and freshness.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with full-flavoured meats such as roast beef or game, like venison served with a red wine reduction and juniper berries.
Service and storage
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve the "Carmina" 2023 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Built for aging, this wine will ideally rest in the cellar until 2029 before being enjoyed, and can continue to evolve until around 2038.
The elegance and complexity of a great Côte-Rôtie wine
The estate
Founded in 2009, the Pierre-Jean Villa estate is a key reference in the northern Rhône Valley. Backed by solid experience in the wine world, its founder has steadily expanded his vineyard, growing from 3 to 20 hectares today. Now led by Pierre-Jean Villa, supported by his children Hugo and Pauline as well as general manager Justin Prudhomme, the estate stands out for its respectful approach to terroir. Certified organic since 2021, the estate crafts authentic wines that reflect the richness of their appellations.
The vineyard
This Côte-Rôtie wine comes from plots located on steep terraces. The terroir consists of granitic soils covered with gneiss, clay, and iron oxide. The vines, ranging from under five to thirty years old, are traditionally trained in gobelet and cordon de Royat, requiring meticulous manual work due to the steep slopes.
The vintage
The year 2023 offered favourable climatic conditions in the region, helping to shape an appealing vintage. The weather favoured a balanced growing cycle, giving rise to grapes combining excellent structural integrity with great aromatic intensity.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the "Carmina" 2023 are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. After rigorous sorting on a vibrating table and partial destemming, the berries macerate for seventeen days. Aging then takes place over a period of twenty-four months, split between traditional barrels and 500-litre demi-muids, allowing for a subtle integration of oak.
