A Napa Valley Red Wine Celebrating the Pioneer Spirit of Shafer Vineyards
The Estate
Founded in 1972 by John Shafer, a former publishing executive in Chicago, Shafer Vineyards now spans around 240 acres of vineyards located in the Stags Leap District and other areas of Napa Valley. Doug Shafer runs the estate, while Elias Fernandez, winemaker since 1994, celebrates his fortieth harvest at the estate in 2024. Since February 2022, the estate has been owned by Shinsegae Property, a subsidiary of the South Korean Shinsegae Group. A pioneer in sustainability, Shafer Vineyards became in 2004 the first winery to be fully powered by solar energy.
The Vineyard
The grapes for TD-9 2019 come from several plots located in the Stags Leap District, in Yountville, and in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains. These hillside vineyards benefit from a natural amphitheater of dry, rocky hills, creating distinctive microclimatic conditions. The soils and exposure of these sites allow optimal ripening of the Bordeaux varieties that make up this blend.
The Vintage
The 2019 vintage in Napa Valley benefited from ideal conditions with a long, sunny summer. This favorable weather allowed the grapes to develop excellent color concentration while building aromas and flavors of great purity and elegance.
Winemaking and Aging
After winemaking, TD-9 2019 was aged for 20 months in 60-gallon French oak barrels, 100% new, sourced from the Allier and Tronçais forests. This extended aging allows for harmonious integration between fruit and oak, while developing the complexity of this California wine.
