Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Bruichladdich 18 Years Old 2024 Edition

Tasting

Appearance
A golden to amber hue, the result of the wood's natural influence, with no artificial colouring whatsoever. A lovely viscosity shows in the glass, a sign that the whisky has not been chill-filtered.

Nose
An indulgent opening of honey, butterscotch and citrus (orange, lemon). The bouquet then evolves towards a rich palette of tropical fruit (pineapple, peach) and yellow fruit, underpinned by soft, toasty oak. Hints of sweet herbs, hay, vanilla and ginger, accompanied by subtle touches of caramel and chocolate, complete this remarkable aromatic complexity.

Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate opens with notes of hay, butterscotch and white pepper, along with a slight effervescent sensation. It then unfolds a generous basket of fruit (peach, pineapple, plum, lime, guava). The structure builds as the tasting progresses, with flavours of cinnamon, an underlying cereal maltiness and soft, toasty, perfectly integrated oak. The medium-length finish leaves an impression of white fruit, honey and oats.

Pairings and Tasting Moments

This 18-year-old single malt is ideally suited to being savoured neat and contemplatively, at the end of a meal or during a special moment. A few drops of water will open up the bouquet even further. When it comes to food, its delicate, fruity and unpeated character pairs beautifully with fresh fruit (peach, pear, citrus), lightly caramelised dishes or fruit desserts that respect the finesse of its aromas.

Mixology

As an exceptional spirit and a premium single malt, it is best enjoyed neat or with a dash of water to appreciate its full complexity, without embellishment.

An Unpeated Single Malt Whisky of Great Elegance

Bruichladdich: The Pioneering Spirit of Islay

Founded in 1881 by the Harvey brothers on the Rhinns peninsula of the island of Islay, the Bruichladdich distillery is a singular figure in Scotch whisky. Designed from the outset as a modern facility, it stands out for its stills with particularly narrow necks, which favour a fine, elegant spirit. After several periods of closure, the distillery was reborn in 2001 before being acquired in 2012 by the Rémy Cointreau group, its current owner. Now led by master distiller Adam Hannett, Bruichladdich proudly asserts its identity as "Progressive Hebridean Distillers". A pioneer in transparency and sustainability, it became the first single malt distillery to achieve B Corp certification, in 2020. Its commitment is reflected in the utmost emphasis placed on local agricultural terroir, slow fermentation and maturation carried out entirely on Islay, thus challenging industry standards.

An Authentic Expression of Terroir: 18 Years Old 2024 Edition

The 18 Years Old 2024 Edition is an exceptional Single Malt that embodies the quintessence of the house's unpeated style. Although it is a non-vintage Scotch whisky, it proudly bears an age statement guaranteeing that the youngest component of the blend has been aged for at least 18 years.

This spirit is crafted from highly traceable raw materials: it includes the very first harvest of barley grown specifically on the island of Islay for the distillery, complemented by organic barley from mainland Scotland. This "field to glass" approach underlines the brand's deep commitment to agricultural terroir.

This edition was matured exclusively on Islay, exposing the casks to the Atlantic's maritime microclimate. The blend is based mainly on ex-bourbon American oak casks, which bring soft, toasty notes, subtly complemented by a small proportion of wine casks that enrich the fruity complexity of the spirit. Bottled on site with local spring water at a high strength of 50% vol., this single malt retains its full aromatic integrity and texture thanks to the complete absence of chill filtration and artificial colouring.
