Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Chartreuse Tarragone Santa Tecla Jaune 2000

Tasting

Colour
An intense, luminous golden-yellow colour, imbued with natural depth and warmth. Its viscous, slightly oily consistency coats the glass with generous, slow-descending legs.

Nose
A complex aromatic progression that opens with fresh, spicy notes, dominated by turmeric, citrus (orange and lemon zest) and subtle aniseed touches. Aeration reveals an underlying herbal thread, accompanied by floral nuances of rose and violet, as well as gentle woody accents from its ageing in oak vats. Light hints of spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and clove complete this captivating bouquet.

Palate
The attack is deceptively soft, quickly revealing remarkable depth. The perfectly balanced sweetness serves as a showcase for the botanical flavours without ever overpowering them. The mid-palate offers a multidimensional structure in which the warmth of the alcohol, turmeric, citrus, aniseed and gentle spices intertwine. The texture is smooth, leading into a lingering finish that evolves from initial sweetness towards herbaceous, delicately bitter notes that invite quiet contemplation.

Food and Wine Pairing
This exceptional cuvée is best enjoyed as a digestif. To fully capture its aromatic complexity and preserve the texture developed through ageing, it is recommended to serve it neat, without ice to avoid any thermal shock, at a cellar temperature of between 12 and 13°C. Using a small tulip-shaped glass or a cognac glass allows for controlled aeration without overwhelming the nose with the power of its aromas.

Mixology
Although this vintage edition from the year 2000 is a collector's item best enjoyed unadorned, Chartreuse Jaune shines in legendary cocktails. It can elevate a variation of the "Last Word" or the "Bijou", or feature in a "Naked and Famous" (mezcal, Aperol, lime juice). Historically, it is also used in the "Mamadeta", the iconic cocktail of the Tarragona festivities, blending green and yellow Chartreuse with lemon granita.

Other Characteristics
Bottled at 43% vol., this edition deliberately returns to the historic alcohol strength used before 1973. This structural choice gives the liqueur an exceptional ageing potential, allowing the "sugar-eating" phenomenon to take place: over the decades, the residual sugars become integrated with the alcohol, reducing the perception of sweetness while enhancing aromatic complexity.

An Exceptional Monastic Liqueur from the Chartreuse Mountains

The Carthusian Order: Four Centuries of Herbal Mystery and Mastery
The story of Chartreuse begins in 1605 with the handing over of a mysterious manuscript by François-Annibal d'Estrées to the monks of the Carthusian Order. Crafted in the heart of the French Alps, in Voiron and now also at the new eco-responsible site of Aiguenoire, this legendary liqueur is based on a closely guarded recipe of 130 plants. Although the famous Spanish distillery closed its doors in 1989, the mark left by this liqueur from Spain remains indelible in the brand's heritage. Today, the estate still belongs entirely to the monastic community, which deliberately limits production in order to preserve its contemplative way of life and the natural resource. Emmanuel Delafon, as CEO of Chartreuse Diffusion, oversees its lay and commercial management, thus perpetuating an institution unique in the world.

The Santa Tecla Commemorative Edition: A Bridge Between Voiron and Tarragona
First launched in 2000, the Chartreuse Tarragone Santa Tecla Jaune 2000 marks a key milestone in the distillery's modern history. This limited edition was created specifically to honour the Catalan city of Tarragona and its famous Saint Thecla festivities, celebrating more than a century of deep cultural ties forged during the monks' exile (1904-1989).

Although it bears the name of the Spanish city, this inaugural cuvée was carefully distilled and aged in the cellars of Voiron, France. The making of this Chartreuse Jaune follows a complex three-stage process: distillation to concentrate the aromatic essences, followed by specific macerations that extract the plants' active compounds while developing its golden-yellow colour entirely naturally, with no synthetic colouring. Finally, extended ageing in tapered oak vats completes its profile.

Each bottle in this collector-prized series is distinguished by a back label reproducing the official poster of that year's Tarragona festivities. By choosing to bottle this edition at 43 degrees, the monks made the bold choice to restore the liqueur's historic strength, offering superior structure and aromatic intensity built to stand the test of time.
