Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chartreuse Tarragone Santa Tecla Jaune 2006

Tasting

Colour
An intensely saturated golden-yellow hue, with a supple structure and fluid viscosity. This luminous colouring is entirely natural, drawing its highlights from saffron and complementary botanical components, without a hint of artificial colouring.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet is a warm invitation showcasing notes of sweet spices, particularly turmeric, paired with citrus zest and subtle anise impressions. These are joined by distinct floral aromas and touches of honeyed sweetness, all perfectly balanced by delicate herbaceous undertones.

Palate
The palate opens soft and rich, dominated by smooth anise, delicate floral expressions and remarkably supple herbaceous characteristics. The mid-palate unfolds a layered complexity encompassing notes of honey, gentle spiced impressions and subtle citrus nuances. Thanks to two decades of bottle ageing, this edition has elegantly absorbed its sugars, offering enhanced aromatic integration and complexity. The finish, with a fine persistence of ten to twenty seconds, leaves a honeyed sweetness that slowly evolves towards subtle herbaceous impressions.

Food Pairing Tips and Tasting Moments

Perfect as a digestif after a hearty meal, its gentle warmth and botanical complexity aid digestion while offering a moment of pure contemplation. It pairs beautifully with aged cheeses showing subtle sweetness, fruit-based desserts (apple, pear, citrus) or dark chocolate confections. As an aperitif, it accompanies charcuterie, aged nuts and mild cheeses with great elegance.

Mixology

While Chartreuse Jaune shines brilliantly in historic cocktails such as the Widow's Kiss or contemporary creations like the Chartreuse Mule, the exceptional status, rarity and years of ageing of this collector's edition call for it to be enjoyed neat, without any embellishment, so as to fully appreciate the patina of time.

Other Characteristics

Bottled at 43% alcohol, this edition deliberately revives the historic strength of Chartreuse Jaune prior to the 1972 reduction. This choice offers a more robust profile and superior aromatic intensity compared to contemporary standard expressions.

An Exceptional Liqueur from the Grande Chartreuse, a Tarragona Heritage

The Carthusian Order: A Centuries-Old Spiritual Calling

Founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno in the Chartreuse mountain range, north of Grenoble, the Carthusian Order upholds a monastic tradition devoted to contemplation, prayer and silence. The story of their famous elixir began in 1605 with the delivery of a mysterious manuscript, and the definitive recipe was completed in 1764. Today, marketing is handled by Chartreuse Diffusion, chaired by Emmanuel Delafon, while the monks retain full ownership of the company. True to their values, they prioritise their spiritual mission and keep their ecological impact to a minimum. Although production now takes place in France, the history of Chartreuse is closely tied to its Spanish exile, as the monks produced a legendary Liqueur d'Espagne in Tarragona from 1904 to 1989.

Chartreuse Tarragone Santa Tecla Jaune 2006: A Limited Collector's Edition

The Chartreuse Tarragone Santa Tecla Jaune 2006 Liqueur is an exceptionally rare herbal liqueur, celebrating the unwavering historical bond between the Carthusian monks and the Catalan city of Tarragona. Since the year 2000, an annual tradition has honoured the Santa Tecla festivities with specific bottlings. This limited edition features a distinctive back label, illustrated according to that year's festival theme, turning each bottle into a true collector's item that transcends its status as a beverage.

Crafted from the secret recipe of 130 plants, flowers, barks and spices, known to only two monks, this cuvée was distilled and aged in Voiron. The production method requires weeks of maceration, cold infusion and distillation in traditional copper stills, followed by meticulous ageing in French oak foudres from the Tronçais forest.

What particularly sets this edition apart, beyond its commemorative labelling, is its bottling at 43% alcohol, recreating the historic strength of the yellow expressions produced before 1972. After nearly two decades of bottle maturation, this cuvée has reached remarkable qualitative maturity, becoming a highly sought-after centrepiece for enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
