Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Perlato del Bosco Rosso 2021 from Tua Rita

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a deep ruby-red hue, lifted by subtle violet highlights.

Nose

The nose opens on an inviting bouquet of small red fruits and wild berries, evoking cherry and raspberry, alongside darker notes of blackberry and plum. With aeration, aromas of candied fruit emerge, followed by delicate hints of violet, balsamic touches, and Mediterranean aromatic herbs. The aromatic expression stands out in particular for its mineral dimension, with nuances reminiscent of iron and slate, a signature of the Metalliferous Hills terroir.

Palate

On the palate, the wine reveals a rich, generous structure, perfectly balanced between fruit, acidity, and tannins. Black cherry flavors take center stage, seamlessly integrated with secondary notes of leather, earth, and a persistent minerality. The tannins are fine and refined, offering a silky texture rather than any aggressive roughness. Despite its full body, the wine retains remarkable freshness and vitality. The finish lingers with impressive length, leaving an impression of mineral salinity paired with a delicate tannic framework.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs ideally with red meats and game, whether roasted, grilled, or braised. It is particularly well suited to roast rabbit, pasta with meat-based sauces, hearty risottos, and a range of beef preparations. Aged hard cheeses and characterful cured meats also make excellent partners.

Serving

Perlato del Bosco Rosso 2021 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 16 and 18°C.

A fresh and elegant Tuscan Sangiovese

The estate

Founded in 1984 by Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti in the medieval village of Suvereto, Tua Rita has established itself as one of the pioneering estates of the Super Tuscan movement. Initially conceived as a two-hectare rural property, the estate gradually expanded to encompass today around sixty hectares of vineyards. Since 2010, the estate has been led by Simena Bisti, Virgilio’s daughter, and her husband Stefano Frascolla, representing the second family generation, while the third generation, embodied by Giovanni Frascolla, is already bringing its creative vision. Tua Rita has practiced organic viticulture for decades, long before this approach became fashionable, demonstrating a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and the authentic expression of terroir.

The vineyard

Perlato del Bosco Rosso comes from Sangiovese vines grown in the Alta Maremma area, in the heart of the Metalliferous Hills. Planted in 2003 with a clone specifically selected for its suitability to the warm, dry climate characteristic of the Tuscan coast, these vines only reached their optimal maturity in 2011. The parcels extend from 100 to 380 meters in altitude, benefiting from a unique position between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Metalliferous Hills. The soils, composed of clay, silt, and sand, stand out for their exceptional richness in mineral elements, notably zinc, iron, and manganese, giving the wines their distinctive saline, mineral character. Planting density ranges from 5,000 to 9,000 vines per hectare depending on the parcel, trained in cordon de Royat or Guyot. Harvesting is carried out exclusively by hand, enabling rigorous selection of grapes at optimal phenolic ripeness.

The vintage

The 2021 vintage in Tuscany was marked by a mild, rainy winter, followed by a spring punctuated by frost episodes that did not, however, affect Tua Rita’s vineyards due to their altitude. June and July proved particularly rainy, followed by unstable weather from mid-July to mid-August. The beneficial rains at the end of August allowed for optimal grape ripening, revealing berries of remarkable generosity and balance.

Vinification and aging

After a meticulous manual harvest, the Perlato del Bosco Rosso 2021 grapes are vinified through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, in wooden vats allowing for extended maceration. Aging takes place over twelve months, split evenly between second- and third-fill French barrels and large 35-hectoliter wooden vats. This approach moderates the influence of oak while benefiting from its positive effects, thus preserving the freshness and varietal character of Sangiovese while adding structure and complexity.
