On the palate, the wine is generous and enveloping. Silky tannins lend the palate an elegant structure, while the finish lingers with impressive length, underscoring the wine’s concentration and balance.
Food and wine pairings
This Cùmaro Riserva 2020 is an ideal match for rare red meats, feathered game, as well as distinctive aged cheeses. Its tannic structure and aromatic complexity also make it an excellent partner for meats in sauce and traditional dishes from the Marche region.

An iconic Conero Riserva from Italy’s Marche region
The estate
Founded in 1957 by Gino Umani Ronchi in Cupramontana, the estate was taken over in 1968 by Roberto Bianchi and his son-in-law Massimo Bernetti. Today, the property is led by Michele Bernetti, President and CEO, alongside his father Massimo Bernetti. The estate spans approximately 210 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, spread across the Marche and Abruzzo. Umani Ronchi was named “Winery of the Year 2024” by Gambero Rosso, recognizing more than sixty years of excellence and commitment to expressing Italian terroirs and sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
The Cùmaro Riserva comes from a vineyard located on the outskirts of the town of Osimo, with a south-eastern exposure, at an altitude between 150 and 200 meters. The very deep soils are clay-limestone in nature, formed from Pliocene–Pleistocene marine deposits, and are exceptionally rich in calcium carbonate. This geological composition gives the terroir excellent drainage while maintaining appropriate moisture for optimal vine development. This vineyard benefits from the protection of Mount Conero, a limestone promontory rising to 572 meters that creates a unique microclimate favorable to growing montepulciano in its northernmost area of cultivation.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage produced grapes of remarkable ripeness, harvested from mid-October onward in order to reach optimal phenolic maturity. Climatic conditions encouraged the development of concentrated, well-balanced berries, enabling the production of a structured and complex wine from the Marche region.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Cùmaro Riserva 2020 are hand-harvested and transported in small crates to preserve their integrity. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 27 to 29°C for 12 to 14 days. Malolactic fermentation then follows naturally. The wine is subsequently aged in 225-liter French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, followed by additional bottle aging of 6 to 8 months in a temperature-controlled cellar, allowing for harmonious integration of its components.
