Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Barbaresco "Costa Russi" 2021 by Angelo Gaja
Tasting
Colour
An intense, translucent ruby hue with remarkable brilliance, showing no signs of evolution at this stage of its youth.
Nose
A complex bouquet blending red berry aromas (morello cherry, strawberry) with floral notes of rose and violet. These are joined by hints of fresh herbs and mint, along with a distinctive saline minerality that evolves towards spice and white pepper.
Palate
The palate opens with impressive volume and elegant structure, carried by supple, refined tannins. Dominated by tangy red fruit flavours, it stretches into a persistent, refreshing and mineral finish, punctuated by nuances of blood orange and eucalyptus.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with traditional Piedmontese dishes such as mushroom risotto, pasta with ragù or aged cheeses like fontina. For bolder pairings, it will ideally accompany tuna tartare, braised oxtail or even stuffed monkfish.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate the Costa Russi 2021, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 17 and 19°C, following a light decanting of 20 to 30 minutes. This wine, built for long ageing, can be cellared until around 2045.
The elegance and finesse of a great Barbaresco wine
The estate
Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, the family estate began as a modest tavern in the village of Barbaresco, in Piedmont. The arrival of Angelo Gaja in 1961 marked a decisive turning point: this pioneer revolutionised regional winemaking practices by introducing innovative techniques and championing unique plots. Today, Angelo Gaja, still deeply involved, leads this iconic estate alongside his three children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni. Together, they carry forward a philosophy of excellence and innovation, elevating their wines to the very pinnacle of world winemaking.
The vineyard
Acquired in 1967, the plot behind this cuvée spans approximately 4.35 hectares within the Barbaresco appellation. Located at an average altitude of 230 metres, just below the famous Sorì Tildin vineyard, the vines enjoy a south-west exposure ideal for grape ripening. The soils are made up mainly of calcareous clay marl, ensuring excellent drainage while supplying the vine with essential minerals.
Winemaking and ageing
After careful sorting, the grapes for the Costa Russi 2021 ferment for around three weeks in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred into 225-litre French oak barrels (approximately one third new wood) for about twelve months of ageing. It then continues to mature for an additional year in large traditional Slavonian oak or chestnut casks, known as "botti", which help refine its structure.
