Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of Angelo Gaja's "Sorì Tildin" 2021

Tasting notes

Colour
Highly brilliant, the wine reveals a vibrant red colour.

Nose
Particularly expressive and fragrant, the bouquet reveals great complexity. It opens with aromas of plum, cherry and blackberry, harmoniously blended with floral notes of lavender and violet. On aeration, nuances of forest floor, fresh mint, sweet spices, coffee bean and graphite come to enrich this aromatic palette.

Palate
Full-bodied and voluminous, the palate seduces with its powerful structure supported by fine, linear and chalky tannins. A lovely acidity balances the whole, allowing flavours of sweet liquorice and fruit to express themselves. The remarkably long finish stands out for its flavourful persistence and a mineral thread with ferrous accents.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with rich and flavourful dishes. It will elevate Piedmontese specialties such as white truffle risotto or braised beef, but will just as easily accompany full-flavoured meats (game, wild boar, veal), poultry in mushroom sauce, or aged cheeses such as Parmesan or Gorgonzola.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate this 2021 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 18 and 20°C, ideally in large glasses, after aerating it for 15 to 20 minutes. With an exceptional aging potential, this wine can continue to develop in the cellar and be enjoyed from around 2027 to 2041.

The elegance and minerality of a Barbaresco wine

The estate

Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja as a modest tavern, the estate has established itself as a true benchmark in Piedmont, Italy. It was under the visionary leadership of Angelo Gaja, starting in the 1960s, that the estate revolutionized local winemaking practices by combining tradition with modern techniques. Today, the family's excellence and philosophy live on through his three children, Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, who now run the estate. They carry on this legacy by incorporating sustainable practices that respect biodiversity in order to enhance their terroirs.

The vineyard

Acquired by the family in 1967, the "Sorì Tildin" vineyard spans just over 3 hectares atop a hill in the commune of Barbaresco. Forming a natural amphitheater at an altitude of about 260 meters, this terroir benefits from optimal south and southwest exposure. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, thrive on soils composed of clay-limestone marl, ideal conditions for giving the wine its elegant, mineral profile.

The vintage

The year 2021 began with a period of stable weather, followed by significant rainfall in April. May temperatures were cooler than seasonal averages, causing a delay of about two weeks in the vines' vegetative development. This later ripening cycle recalls the climatic conditions observed in previous decades.

Winemaking and aging

For this cuvée, the fermentation and maceration stages span approximately three weeks. The wine then undergoes careful aging for 24 months in oak barrels before bottling.

Grape variety

Nebbiolo (100%).
