Description
An Elegant and Complex Saint-Julien Wine
The Estate
Founded in 1902, Clos du Marquis takes its origins from the Petit Clos, the former residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Adjoining Château Léoville Las Cases, the Clos du Marquis vineyard lies on some of the finest terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. A flagship brand of Domaines Delon, Clos du Marquis has a distinctive identity all its own. Its wines rank among the elite of Saint-Julien's greatest red wines.
The Vineyard
Set on the most prestigious terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation, Clos du Marquis is an exceptional vineyard located 500 metres from the entrance to the Léoville Las Cases vineyard. It covers some 43 hectares of vines. The terroir is homogeneous, with a rich layer of organic matter on the surface and soils of sandy-clay Quaternary gravels. These gravels are older and finer than those of the Léoville Las Cases enclos, and subject the vines to greater water stress. Lying further from the Gironde, the Clos du Marquis terroir is consequently later-ripening, with an extended maturation period for the grapes.
The Vintage
A sun-drenched vintage, 2011 was the hottest year since the 2003 heatwave. A particularly warm, dry spring encouraged extremely early flowering. The beginning of summer was marked by significant water stress, gradually offset by rainfall that came as a welcome relief for the vineyard. These conditions allowed all grape varieties to reach excellent phenolic ripeness.
Blend
Clos du Marquis 2011 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (22%) and Cabernet Franc (13%).
Serving
We recommend decanting the wine 1 hour before tasting.
