The Authentic Expression of a Great Champagne Terroir by Laherte Frères
The Estate
Founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptiste Laherte in the village of Chavot, the Laherte Frères estate now spans 11 hectares. Located in Champagne, this family-run estate has managed to preserve its heritage while evolving toward environmentally friendly practices. Currently led by Aurélien Laherte, representing the seventh generation since taking the helm in 2005, the estate stands out for its low-intervention approach and its organic- and biodynamic-inspired viticulture. The estate is renowned worldwide for its authentic cuvées that beautifully showcase the unique expression of each parcel.
The Vineyard
The vineyard from which this wine originates is located in the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay, a unique geographical area in Champagne that links the Côte des Blancs to the Marne Valley. The specific plot, named "Les Rouges Maisons," was planted in 1983 on the terroir of Chavot. The vines thrive on soils composed of soft, friable chalk, covered with a layer of clay mixed with flint, limestone, schist, and marl. The estate favors natural viticulture, promoting biodiversity and soil health.
Winemaking and Aging
The winemaking process for the Laherte Frères "Les Rouges Maison" Blanc de Noirs 2021 follows a rigorous plot-by-plot approach. The base wine ferments in used Burgundian oak barrels. Aging takes place on fine lees for approximately six months, accompanied by regular bâtonnage. To preserve the wine's freshness and natural malic acidity, malolactic fermentation is not carried out. Finally, the cuvée is bottled under pressure with minimal dosage to allow the terroir to fully express itself.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
