The Freshness of a Provence Red Wine by Château Malherbe
The Estate
Located in Bormes-les-Mimosas in Provence, Château Malherbe is a family estate whose history as a modern wine-growing operation dates back to 1964. Stretching across 25 hectares along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, this historic terroir is now run by Sébastien Ferrari, the fourth generation of the family. Deeply committed to environmental stewardship, the estate stands out for its pioneering approach, with organic certification and biodynamic farming. The vineyard enjoys an exceptional setting facing the Fort de Brégançon, yielding distinctive wines that combine maritime freshness with complexity.
The Vineyard
This Vin de France comes from a unique coastal terroir on the western foothills of Cap Bénat. The estate's oldest vines thrive on well-drained slopes of silvery schist and reddish-brown clay. Exposed to a hot Mediterranean climate and significant water stress, the vineyard benefits from the moderating influence of sea breezes. Farmed according to biodynamic principles, the estate encourages naturally low yields and keeps its soils alive through cover crops rolled down as mulch and the use of natural preparations.
Vinification and Ageing
Conceived as a red that breaks the mould, the Madame Ferrari 2023 cuvée is made using methods inspired by Burgundian tradition. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. Vinification is carried out with whole bunches, a short maceration, foot-treading and gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation to enhance drinkability. The wine is then aged for ten months in Burgundy barrels that have previously held several wines.
Grape Varieties
The typical blend of this cuvée comprises 25% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 25% Cinsault and 25% Rolle.
