Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 by Delas

Tasting

Colour

This Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 displays a very deep purple colour with almost garnet highlights, reflecting the concentration of a ripe hillside Syrah.

Nose

The nose is both powerful and refined, unfolding successive waves of black and blue fruit such as black plum, black raspberry and fresh blueberry. Notes of salted liquorice, smoked meat, bay leaf and toasted garrigue blend with subtle toasted cedar, while floral touches of dried violet, lavender and rose add further delicacy.

Palate

The palate is full-bodied, structured and dense, carried by a lively acidity that lends it dynamism and energy. The tannins, tightly woven yet silky, evolve from a velvety texture on the attack to an elegant firmness on the finish. A palette of black and blue fruit, black pepper, garrigue, black olive and liquorice emerges, with a touch of red citrus on the finish. The long, fragrant finish ends on notes of violet, incense and pepper, with a more mineral than purely powerful character.

Food and Wine Pairing

This Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 is an ideal match for roasted meats such as beef, wild waterfowl, truffle-based dishes and richly seasoned stews.

Serving and Cellaring

We recommend opening the bottle of Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 one to three hours before tasting, and decanting it if it has been cellared for more than five years. This wine has an ageing potential of up to approximately 15 years.

Côte-Rôtie Seigneur de Maugiron 2023: Syrah Expressing a Metamorphic Terroir

The Estate

Maison Delas, founded in 1835 in Tournon-sur-Rhône under the name Audibert et Delas and renamed Delas Frères in 1924, is now based in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols and Tain-l'Hermitage, in the heart of the Rhône Valley. It now belongs to Maison Delas Frères, part of the Louis Roederer group via Champagne Deutz. Renowned for its mastery of the great hillside terroirs of the northern Rhône, the house relies on its own vineyards, complemented by rigorous partnerships, in a constant pursuit of precision and elegance.

The Vineyard

The Seigneur de Maugiron cuvée draws its grapes from the dizzying slopes of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, divided between the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde, two historic micro-terroirs located in the communes of Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons. The slopes sometimes reach gradients of 60%, at altitudes between 180 and 325 metres. The soils, metamorphic in nature, are made up of mica-schist, gneiss and migmatite, lending the wine finesse and distinguished complexity.

The Vintage

The 2023 vintage was marked by a dry winter, followed by a milder spring that allowed the vines to better withstand the intense summer heat. These climatic conditions resulted in limited yields, but the harvest, which began at the end of August, delivered healthy, concentrated grapes, ideal for crafting a balanced and expressive wine.

Winemaking and Ageing

The harvest for Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 is carried out entirely by hand, terroir by terroir, at optimal ripeness. The grapes are then placed in palox bins and chilled in a cold room before destemming, then transferred by gravity into truncated conical stainless steel tanks. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, with a gentle extraction designed to preserve the purity of the fruit. Ageing continues for approximately 18 months in oak barrels, 20% of which are new, complemented by a few large-format foudres, followed by a few months in stainless steel tanks before bottling, for a total of approximately 21 months.

Grape Variety

This Seigneur de Maugiron 2023 is made from a blend of Syrah and Viognier, the traditional grape varieties of the Côte-Rôtie appellation.
