Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Galets Oligocène 2020 from Domaine Bott Geyl
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a seductive and translucent ruby red hue, testifying to the optimal maturity of the grapes at the time of harvest.
Nose
The nose reveals a delicate aromatic complexity with notes of red fruit, notably fresh strawberry and Morello cherries. Aromas of mint and mint leaves accompany touches of roasting, toasted bread, and sweet spices like cinnamon. With aeration, nuances of wild berries, roasted citrus, and white pepper appear, accompanied by a subtle stony minerality.
Palate
On the palate, the wine unfolds a silky and voluptuous texture with a juicy character and remarkable freshness. The tannins reveal themselves to be fine and granular, appearing towards the mid-palate to offer a beautiful structure. The wine expresses a radiant fruitiness accompanied by notes of fine licorice and a soothing minerality. The finish is clean and persistent, leaving a sensation of great freshness with flavors of ripe red fruits, light spices, and a mineral touch, without any bitterness.
Food and wine pairings
This Pinot Noir pairs ideally with duck breast, quail, or roasted pigeon. It also goes perfectly with veal kidneys or strips of meat with sauce diable. Its delicate structure and freshness also allow it to harmonize with preparations based on wild mushrooms, sophisticated white meats, or aged cheeses presenting a certain natural acidity.
Service and storage
The Galets Oligocène 2020 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favorably until around 2036. Its structural profile, characterized by balanced natural acidity and fine tannins, gives it excellent aging potential.
An exceptional Alsatian Pinot Noir with mineral character and remarkable freshness
The estate
Founded in 1959 by Édouard Bott, Domaine Bott Geyl is located in Beblenheim, in the heart of wine-growing Alsace. Since 1993, Jean-Christophe Bott and his wife Valérie have managed this family property of 18 hectares distributed over seven communes. The estate, which counts six Grands Crus, has been certified in organic farming since 2000 and has practiced biodynamics since 2002. Recognized for its philosophy of "Everything happens in the vineyard," Domaine Bott Geyl received a third star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2026 by La Revue du Vin de France, consecrating its excellence among the French wine elite.
The vineyard
The Galets Oligocène 2020 comes from specific plots located in Beblenheim, on a marl-silt-limestone terroir characterized by the presence of small rounded pebbles dating from the Oligocene geological period, about thirty million years ago. This unique geological composition, witness to ancient sedimentary deposits, confers a distinctive minerality to this Alsace wine. The limestone soils offer excellent drainage while retaining necessary water through fissures in the bedrock. The vineyard is managed using biodynamic agriculture with voluntarily limited yields, favoring the development of deep roots that draw from the different geological layers of the subsoil.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest for the Galets Oligocène 2020 was carried out entirely by hand. The grapes were pressed as whole clusters for nine hours, then the juice settled statically for twenty-four hours. Alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts for three months, without the addition of enzymes, commercial yeasts, or fining agents. Aging took place on fine lees until September, followed by filtration before bottling. The wine then rested for several months in a climate-controlled cellar before its release.
