An authentic and mineral Alsace Riesling from Domaine Bott Geyl
The estate
Domaine Bott Geyl traces its origins back to 1795, when Jean-Martin Geyl planted the first vines in Béblenheim. The union of the Bott and Geyl families in 1926 gave birth to the current entity, officially created in the 1950s. Jean-Christophe Bott and Valérie Bott-Cartier manage this 15-hectare estate located in Alsace. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture in the region, the estate obtained organic certification in 2000 and biodynamic certification in 2002. The vineyard spans seven communes and includes five Lieux-dits as well as six Grands Crus, covering approximately five hectares.
The vineyard
The Riesling "Kronenbourg" comes from a terroir located in the communes of Béblenheim and Zellenberg, in the heart of Alsace. The clay-marl-limestone soils, rich in limestone and minerals, give the wine its characteristic mineral signature. The vineyard is managed with high planting density to encourage deep rooting of the vines. Cultivation practices respect biodynamic principles: ploughing and composting replace herbicides, herbal teas are used for vineyard protection, and severe pruning naturally limits yields.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Alsace allowed for satisfactory maturity accumulation while preserving the region's characteristic natural acidity. Climatic conditions favored a balance between concentration and freshness, allowing the grapes to reach optimal phenolic ripeness.
Winemaking and aging
The harvest for the Riesling "Kronenbourg" 2020 is carried out manually with a rigorous selection of bunches. The grapes are transported in small crates then pressed delicately for six to eighteen hours in pneumatic presses. After three to four days of settling, fermentation starts naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts and continues for three to six months. The wine is then aged on fine lees. No enzymes, chaptalization or fining are practiced, in accordance with the estate's natural winemaking philosophy.
