Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Sensonne 2024 from Domaine Coursodon
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour is a garnet hue of beautiful intensity, typical of a young, concentrated Syrah.
Nose
The nose is complex and expressive, blending aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry with notes of graphite and freshly ground pepper. Ageing also brings spicy touches of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, which complete an aromatic palette still marked by oak in its youth.
Palate
The palate is dense and precise, combining power and elegance. The fruit is ripe and concentrated, carried by pronounced minerality and a freshness that brings tension and balance. The fine, well-integrated tannins support a finish of great length, where juicy, spicy black fruit gives way to notes of menthol and clove that will integrate with time.
Food and Wine Pairing
La Sensonne 2024 is an ideal match for red meats and small game, as well as certain characterful cheeses. In a more gastronomic register, this wine also pairs very well with poultry prepared with offal and foie gras, served with sautéed wild mushrooms, or with a leg of lamb.
Serving and Cellaring
La Sensonne 2024 can be opened approximately one hour before tasting to allow the oak to integrate and the aromas to express themselves fully. It is best served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. According to the estate's technical sheet, this wine has an ageing potential of up to around 2038.
A Saint-Joseph from Domaine Coursodon that is both dense and mineral
The Estate
Domaine Coursodon was established in the late 19th century by Jean-Auguste Coursodon in Mauves, in the northern Rhône Valley, the historic cradle of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Today run by Pierre and Jérôme Coursodon, the fifth generation of the family, the estate extends over approximately 16 hectares and is devoted exclusively to the production of red and white Saint-Joseph. Practising sustainable viticulture close to organic, the estate is recognised as one of the benchmarks of the appellation.
The Vineyard
The grapes for La Sensonne come from all of the estate's terroirs in the Saint-Joseph appellation, located on very steep, south-facing granite slopes with shallow soils. The vines, planted at a density of 8,500 vines per hectare, are trained in goblet with staking on individual posts. Work in the vineyard is entirely manual, as the topography does not allow any mechanisation, and vine treatments are applied by backpack sprayer. Yields are deliberately limited to 34 hl/ha.
The Vintage
The 2024 vintage in Saint-Joseph is characterised by light to medium-bodied reds that are taut and spicy, with fine, elegant tannins and relatively moderate alcohol levels, resulting in particularly drinkable and refreshing wines.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes for La Sensonne 2024 are hand-harvested and transported whole in 40-kilogram crates to the cellar. After sorting on a table, the harvest is destemmed, then maceration and fermentation take place in open vats for approximately 18 days, with two pigeages (punch-downs) daily. Ageing takes place on the lees, in 100% new barrels, for approximately 15 months.
Grape Variety
La Sensonne 2024 is made from Syrah.
