An elegant and complex Burgundy Grand Cru produced using biodynamics
The estate
Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 by Nathalie and Jean-Charles Boisset, who consolidated the family plots acquired since 1964. Located in Premeaux-Prissey in Burgundy, the estate now covers 44 hectares spread over 72 plots covering 37 appellations in the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. Certified organic since 1998 and biodynamic since 2011, the estate is currently managed by Sylvie Poillot. Jean-Charles Boisset is the General Manager of this family estate, recognized for its environmental commitment and the quality of its terroir wines.
The vineyard
Charmes-Chambertin is a Grand Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin located in the Côte de Nuits. The Les Mazoyères plots of Domaine de la Vougeraie were planted between 1901 and 1902, making it one of the oldest vineyards of the estate. The soils present a stratified composition with clayey silts in the upper part, very calcareous, and pure silts in the lower part. The planting density reaches 10,000 vines per hectare, 100% from massal selection. The vines are managed according to biodynamic principles, with horse plowing on certain plots and the application of biodynamic preparations.
Winemaking and aging
The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru "Les Mazoyères" 2018 was vinified using an artisanal approach respectful of the fruit. Manual harvesting was followed by cold pre-fermentation maceration for five days. Vinification took place in open wooden vats with 100% whole bunches, using indigenous yeasts. The total maceration lasted about twenty days with punching down and pumping over. Aging continued for 16 months in French oak barrels from the Cîteaux forest, with 35% new oak. Bottling was carried out by gravity according to the lunar calendar.
