Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 Famille Isabel Ferrando
Tasting
Colour
This red wine from France displays an appealing ruby colour of medium intensity, with a delicate translucency.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals great complexity. It opens with generous aromas of ripe black fruits, such as blueberry and blackberry, before giving way to subtle floral notes reminiscent of lavender and crushed rose. Mineral touches, sweet spices and Provençal garrigue round out this olfactory ensemble.
Palate
The attack reveals a silky, enveloping texture, supported by perfectly polished tannins. The palate, with a lovely fullness, confirms the fruity aromas perceived on the nose, enhanced by a hint of minerality. The balance is maintained by just the right acidity, leading to a persistent and elegant finish, marked by spicy nuances.
Food and wine pairing
This cuvée pairs wonderfully with roasted or braised red meats, such as leg of lamb with herbs, as well as with sauce-based dishes like a Provençal daube. Game, sautéed wild mushrooms and a platter of aged cheeses also make excellent choices to accompany this wine.
Service and storage
Although this Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 is already very approachable, it possesses remarkable aging potential and can be enjoyed until around 2040.
The authentic, biodynamic expression of a great Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir
The estate
Originally founded in 1930 under the name Domaine Saint-Préfert, this estate in the Rhône Valley underwent a true renaissance following its acquisition in 2002 by Isabel Ferrando. A passionate former banker, she has succeeded in elevating the estate among the region's essential references. Renamed Famille Isabel Ferrando in 2020, the estate is now run by Isabel and her daughter Guillemette. Driven by their environmental convictions, they craft wines of great finesse that accurately and precisely reflect the sun-drenched identity of their terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the southern sector of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in the Les Serres locality, the vineyard flourishes under a warm Mediterranean climate, swept by the mistral. The vines draw their resources from a complex geological mosaic, dominated by the famous rolled pebbles, gravel and a bed of blue clay subsoil. Certified in biodynamic farming, the estate places paramount importance on preserving biodiversity, notably through a massale selection conservatory.
The vintage
The year was marked by extreme weather conditions. After a classic winter, a historic drought and scorching temperatures settled in from spring through the end of summer. Fortunately, saving rainfall in August allowed ripening to progress, leading to an early harvest and limited yields, but of exceptional concentration.
Winemaking and aging
For this Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022, the harvest is placed in vats as whole bunches to preserve the integrity of the berries. Fermentation begins naturally through indigenous yeasts. Aging then takes place over a period of 18 months, carefully divided between wooden foudres (34%), concrete vats (33%) and terracotta amphorae (33%).
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of Grenache (approximately 60%), Mourvèdre (16 to 18%), Cinsault (approximately 16%) and Syrah (approximately 8%).
