Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Musigny Grand Cru 2023 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep, intense crimson-ruby hue.
Nose
Beautifully complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of red and black fruit (strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blackberry) intertwined with floral notes of rose petals. Hints of spice, undergrowth, mocha and a chalky minerality complete the picture.
Palate
Ample and full, the palate offers a concentrated, juicy core of fruit, supported by lively acidity and fine yet dense tannins. The silky texture stretches out into a long, vibrant and persistent finish.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this Musigny Grand Cru 2023, it is best served at a temperature of between 16 and 18°C. A wine with long ageing potential, it will ideally begin to open up between 2029 and 2031 and can continue to develop in the cellar until around 2053.
A great red Burgundy by Joseph Drouhin
The estate
Founded in Beaune in 1880 by a young man from Chablis, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic name in Burgundy. Now run by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as president, the house farms 100 hectares of vines across the region. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture, the estate has cultivated its entire vineyard organically and biodynamically since the late 1980s. True to its philosophy of natural responses, the family produces wines renowned for their finesse and the pure expression of their terroirs.
The vineyard
Musigny is a prestigious terroir located in the commune of Chambolle-Musigny, in the Côte de Nuits. The estate's plot, covering a very limited area of around 0.67 hectares, lies on an east-facing rocky terrace. The brown limestone soil, low in clay and enriched with ancient scree, provides ideal drainage. The vines are planted at high density and farmed according to strict biodynamic principles, including horse ploughing and cover cropping.
Winemaking and ageing
Hand-harvesting in small crates precedes meticulous winemaking for this Musigny Grand Cru 2023. The proportion of whole bunches varies from 20 to 50%. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in small open vats over two to three weeks, punctuated by punch-downs and pump-overs. After gentle vertical pressing, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels air-dried for three years, around 30% of which are new.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir
