Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from L'Oratoire des Papes
Tasting
Colour
A garnet to deep plum hue unfolds, reflecting a beautiful evolution.
Nose
The nose releases aromas of sweet fruit and liquorice, intertwined with notes of garrigue herbs and stewed vegetables. With time, it develops a tertiary bouquet evoking leather, blond tobacco and dried fig.
Palate
On the palate, this medium-bodied wine charms with its elegance and softness. The structure is supple, supported by melted tannins and a generous texture, delivering a delicate and warming experience.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs ideally with pink-cooked red meats such as duck breast, roast poultry, mushroom dishes and Provençal specialities such as daube. It also goes very well with feathered game and semi-matured pressed-curd cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
This 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has reached its plateau of maturity and is ready to be enjoyed now to fully appreciate its delicacy.
The Elegance and Maturity of a Sun-Drenched Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The Estate
Founded in 1880 around a plot of land containing an oratory dedicated to Saint Mark, L'Oratoire des Papes is a historic estate in the Rhône Valley in France. Recognisable by its iconic label dating from 1926, this legendary cru was acquired in 2000 by Maison Ogier, its current owner. Under the technical direction of Édouard Guérin, the estate stands out as a true ambassador of Provençal excellence, combining a rich heritage, troglodyte cellars and a philosophy resolutely focused on the authentic expression of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The 25-hectare vineyard extends across a mosaic of rare terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, combining limestone fragments, sandy safres and rolled pebbles. Farmed organically with biodynamic trials, the estate favours working the soil by horse and exclusively hand-harvested grapes. The vines also benefit from the drying effect of the mistral, which naturally protects the grapes from disease.
The Vintage
The year 2003 was marked by a summer heatwave and extreme temperatures across the entire region. These repeated heatwaves, combined with a water deficit, led to early ripening of the berries, making it necessary to bring forward the harvest dates to preserve the balance of the fruit.
Vinification and Maturation
The vinification of this 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape aims to faithfully express the terroir without excessive extraction. Maturation first takes place for around twelve months in French oak truncated conical vats, promoting gentle micro-oxygenation, and then continues for eight months in concrete vats in order to harmonise the final blend within the estate's troglodyte cellars.
Grape Varieties
This blend is dominated by Grenache, complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre.
