Nose

The estate

Officially founded in 1978, the Sandrone Luciano brand is an essential reference in Piedmont. Located at the heart of the Barolo appellation, the estate today spans 27 hectares across the Langhe and Roero. Historically recognised for its approach skilfully combining tradition and modernity, the estate has specialised in showcasing Nebbiolo. Following the passing of its founder in 2023, stylistic and technical continuity is brilliantly ensured by the current generation, embodied by Luca Sandrone as technical director and Barbara Sandrone in charge of managing the estate.

The vineyard

The grapes come from five distinct terroirs located across several communes within the Barolo appellation: Vignane, Merli, Baudana, Villero and Le Coste di Monforte. This diversity of altitudes, exposures and soils, combining marl, sand and limestone, brings great complexity. The vineyard is managed with a respectful approach, favouring minimal intervention focused on disease prevention in order to preserve the vines' natural balance.

The vintage

2022 stood out for the remarkable resilience of the vines in the face of drought. After a dry autumn and the first snowfall in early December, winter proved mild. Spring began with a classic budburst, followed by heavy rainfall. The season then continued under hot, dry conditions, fortunately tempered by cool nights. These conditions accelerated ripening, allowing for early harvesting between late September and early October, yielding healthy, slightly smaller berries with an excellent balance between fruit and acidity.

Winemaking and ageing

This wine is crafted through separate vinification of each plot. Fermentation, spontaneous and triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts, takes place in open steel vats. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in 500-litre French oak barrels. The final blending of the different terroirs takes place only once this period is complete. Finally, this Italian wine undergoes a further 18 months of bottle ageing before release.
