Nose
Rich and remarkably complex, the bouquet opens with a distinct yet elegant peat smoke. It then reveals notes of sea spray, roasted pineapple, and sweet spices such as cinnamon and aniseed. After a few minutes of aeration, deep aromas of dark chocolate, smoked vanilla, roasted honey, and orange peel enrich this particularly layered aromatic profile.

Palate
The attack is soft at first before revealing the full power of its 48% ABV. Rich and evolving, the palate unfolds smoky peat harmoniously blended with saline notes reminiscent of smoked oysters and fish oil. Flavors of bitter dark chocolate and sweet malt intertwine with hints of black pepper and iodine. The medium-to-long finish lingers on a smoky, dry impression, softened by a touch of creamy vanilla and a delicate spicy warmth.

Pairings and Tasting Moments
This complex spirit is best enjoyed at the end of a meal, during a slow, meditative tasting. It is recommended to let it breathe in the glass for a few minutes to release all its aromas; adding a few drops of water can also reveal unexpected fruity and honeyed notes. At the table, it pairs wonderfully with smoked meats, particularly honey-glazed grilled bacon, as well as seafood such as smoked oysters or roasted prawns. It also creates bold, remarkable pairings with cocoa-based dishes, such as chocolate-crusted steak or dark sea-salt fudge, as well as with characterful cheeses.

Mixology
While its complexity naturally invites neat tasting, this spirit also lends itself to sophisticated mixology creations. It excels in a "Smoky Old Fashioned," paired with brown sugar and smoked bitters over a slow-melting ice cube, further enhancing its bitter chocolate notes. It can also give a fresh twist to a "Manhattan" with sweet vermouth and orange bitters, or serve as the base for a modernist "Whisky Sour," where its salinity and smokiness perfectly balance the acidity of fresh lemon and the sweetness of honey.

Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston, the Laphroaig distillery is an iconic institution of Scottish Whisky, located on the south-west coast of the Isle of Islay. A true guardian of centuries-old traditions, it stands out for its historic production facilities, including an on-site traditional malting floor and seven uniquely shaped copper stills. Laphroaig's identity is built on controlled innovation and a deep respect for its maritime terroir, drawing its mineral-rich water from the Kilbride Stream. Now owned by the Japanese group Suntory Global Spirits, the distillery is run by Distillery Manager George Campbell, supported by Pamela Ferguson as Operations Manager. Together, they carry on the excellence of this island gem, skillfully balancing artisanal heritage with contemporary challenges.

The Cask Lore: The Distillery's Story in a Bottle
Created in 2016 by former Distillery Manager John Campbell, The Cask Lore is a permanent expression that embodies the transmission of the house's know-how through the generations. This exceptional Single Malt is the result of a meticulous blend of different distillates aged between 7 and 21 years, creating a true time capsule of the distillery's production methods.

The production of this Whisky relies on local raw materials, notably barley partially malted on-site and cold-smoked using the island's unique peat, rich in heather and fossilized marine organisms. Distillation, exceptionally slow, takes place in stills fitted with very tall lyne arms, preserving the spirit's lightness while concentrating its complex aromas.

The uniqueness of The Cask Lore lies in its sophisticated maturation strategy, described as a "richness of riches." The blend combines first-fill ex-bourbon casks, which provide the classic peaty signature, with a secondary maturation in virgin European oak casks for tannic structure. These are complemented by ex-Oloroso sherry casks lending notes of dried fruit, "quarter casks" accelerating aromatic extraction, and the distillery's own refill casks to ensure continuity of the house style. This diversity of vessels shapes an organoleptic profile of rare depth, celebrating two centuries of Scottish artisanal expertise.
