Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2018 Le Corton Grand Cru has turned out very nicely in bottle, offering up a deep and complex bouquet of cassis, wild berries, grilled meats, black truffle, blood orange and sweet forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's layered and concentrated, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, sapid finish. While this is a powerful, structured wine, it's also very refined, and this is one 2018 that will offer a broad drinking window.

Decanter

In 2018 the picking began on 5th September and yielded a rich, ripe red and black berry fruit character, yet there was no sense of excess, and the wine retained a pleasant freshness despite the heat. The tannins are firm, the texture rewardingly dense, and the finish is long. Produced from the large parcel purchased from the Moyne Jacqueminot family with an east-southeast exposure, just below the portion dedicated to Chardonnay.

James Suckling

A firm, linear red with ripe strawberries and raspberries and some hazelnuts and citrus rind. It’s medium- to full-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight at the end. Drink after 2022.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2018 Le Corton Grand Cru has an upfront, ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry nose that feels a little monotone against its peers, perhaps due to some Brettanomyces. It would benefit from more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, mealy, and slightly attenuated toward the finish. This is a perplexing showing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

A complex and delicate grand wine from Corton

The property

It was in Beaune, in 1731, that the House of Bouchard Père & Fils was founded. Accumulating almost three centuries of history, Bouchard Père & Fils is thus one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. At the head of an exceptional domain in Côte d'Or, the 9th generation of the family still perpetuates this unique know-how in the art of making great Burgundy wines today.

Patience built up over the years, the vineyard of the domain Bouchard Père et Fils now extends over 130 hectares of vines. Bringing together prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the vineyard of Bouchard Père & Fils constitutes a unique viticultural heritage in Burgundy.

The vineyard

The Corton Grand Cru Domaine of Bouchard Père & Fils is made from a 3.55 hectare vineyard located within the historic plot of the eponymous appellation. Facing east, this terroir rests on stony clay-limestone soils. The only Grand Cru in red from the Côte de Beaune, Corton is also the only one to be divided into sub-climates.

Vinification and aging

Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo rigorous sorting as well as total or partial destemming depending on the vintages. Fermentation in small containers. Gentle pressing. Maceration for about 18 to 21 days. The aging is carried out for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels (of which 40 to 50% are new) in the Bastions cellars of the old Château de Beaune.

Blend

Pinot noir (100%).
