Description
The finesse and balance of a Pauillac Second Wine
The estate
The Libéral family managed the Château Haut-Bages Libéral from the early 18th century. Over time, these connoisseurs brought together the finest terroirs of Pauillac. Today, this Pauillac grand cru has been owned by the Villars family since 1983, who have restored Château Haut-Bages Libéral to its former glory by undertaking a complete overhaul of the winemaking facilities and steering its vineyard management towards sustainable viticulture.
The vineyard
Certified organic since 2019, Château Haut-Bages Libéral obtained biodynamic certification in 2021. The 30 hectares of vines are planted on Günzian Garonne gravel over a clay-limestone subsoil.
The wine
La Chapelle de Haut-Bages is the Second Wine of Château Haut-Bages Libéral. This Pauillac wine is produced from a vineyard made up of clay-limestone Graves surrounding the estate, as well as a vineyard on the Bages plateau characterised by its deep gravel soils.
Winemaking and aging
Parcel-by-parcel winemaking. Maceration with the addition of inert gas to promote gentle movement. Daily pumpovers. A 24-day maceration. Aging lasts 12 months in barrels (50%, of which 10% are new) and in egg-shaped vats (50%).
Blend
La Chapelle de Haut-Bages Libéral 2022 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) and Merlot (28%).
