Description

A Premier Grand Cru Classé of sensual and racy Saint-Émilion

The estate

This Premier Grand Cru Classé takes its name Château Angélus from the winegrowers who intended to ring the three church bells simultaneously in the heart of the famous medieval town of Saint-Émilion. This legendary estate of the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for 8 generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has safeguarded this exceptional heritage of Bordeaux's right bank.

The vineyard

Château Angélus is a Saint-Émilion wine originating from an exceptional terroir whose vines are located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. This terroir spans clay-limestone soils on the upper part and sandy clay-limestone soils on the hillside.

The vintage

2016 was a year marked by exceptional drought (three months of summer without water). With beneficial rain in mid-September and one of the most remarkable Indian summers, the Château Angélus team harvested grapes of exceptional maturity from October 4 to 21.

Blend

Merlot (60%)
Cabernet Franc (40%).

Characteristics and tasting recommendations for Château Angélus 2016

Tasting

Color
The color is a beautiful, very dark inky hue.

Nose
The nose combines from the very first sniff sensual and profound fragrances of Lebanese cedar and bitter orange peel with an impression of freshness and great tension. Upon aeration, aromas of dark fruits (blackberry and blueberry) unfold indulgently yet without excess, offering a mouthwatering brightness and purity. Smelling this wine is like biting into a grape. At this stage, the bouquet, so broad aromatically, is far from revealing the full measure of the wine's richness, requiring a good decade before it truly opens.

Palate
The attack is precise and dynamic with a fleshy, velvety mid-palate atop a refined and creamy tannic body. Ideally balanced, this wine, with its impressive volume, already enjoys excellent drinkability. This superb combination positions Château Angélus 2016 among exceptional wines with outstanding aging potential.
