Description

A Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion, pure and elegant

The property

This Premier Grand Cru Classé takes its name from the winemakers of Château Angélus, who intended to simultaneously ring the bells of the three churches in the heart of the famous medieval town of Saint-Émilion. This legendary estate of the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for eight generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has cared for this exceptional heritage on the right bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Château Angélus 2020 is a Saint-Émilion wine from a 27-hectare vineyard, whose vines, with an average age of 38 years, are situated on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. This terroir covers clay-limestone soils on the upper part and clay-sandy-limestone soils on the hillside.

Listening to its environment, the estate is undergoing conversion to organic farming and the vineyard is certified High Environmental Value level 3.

The vintage

Heavy rainfall in winter and spring allowed the soils to build up a lifesaving water reserve throughout the year to preserve the vineyard’s balance. The 2020 vintage is marked both by a prolonged drought and by the ability of the soils (clays, limestones) to provide perfect balance by drawing on these water reserves. Summer conditions were ideal to ensure good ripeness and to produce healthy, balanced grapes rich in polyphenols. Balanced and complete, 2020 is a perfect synthesis of its two illustrious predecessors, 2018 and 2019.

Winemaking and aging

Vinifications are carried out in oak and stainless steel vats for the merlots, and in concrete vats for the cabernet francs. A pre-fermentation maceration conducted on certain vats according to the specifics of the grapes precedes alcoholic fermentation, followed by a post-fermentation maceration of 1 to 3 weeks.

Barrel filling takes place immediately after racking. Aging, lasting 20 to 22 months, is done in new French oak barrels for the merlots and certain cabernet francs. A specific aging is carried out in 30 hl casks for the cabernet francs selected for their aromatic richness.

Characteristics and Tasting Recommendations for Château Angélus 2020

Tasting

Color
Bright and dense, the color is deep, almost black. Violet hues attest to the perfect ripeness of the grapes.

Nose
Aromatic, the nose blends delicious fruity fragrances (black fruits, wild cherries, blackberries) with elegant floral notes (peony, violet).

Palate
The refinement of the tannins gives a spherical and voluptuous structure. Fresh and harmonious, the palate charms with its extreme elegance and purity, exhaling the precision of the merlots and the character of the cabernet francs.
