Description
Tasting Notes and Recommendations for Château Beychevelle 1994
Tasting
Appearance
This red wine displays a garnet hue, lightening slightly at the edges towards brick or orange tints.
Nose
Light and complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of black fruits such as blackberry, intertwined with notes of cedar, iodine and spice. Over time, subtle tertiary nuances of leather, blond tobacco and undergrowth enrich this aromatic palette.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate offers a fleshy texture supported by a fine acidity. The tannins, once rich, are now perfectly integrated and silky. The whole is distinguished by a harmonious balance and extends into a finish of remarkable length.
Food and wine pairings
This mature great wine pairs ideally with refined dishes. It will beautifully complement tender red meats such as roasted rack of lamb or beef fillet, as well as noble poultry like duck with red berries or pigeon with mushrooms. It also pairs wonderfully with classic French cuisine and hard cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve Château Beychevelle 1994 at a temperature of 17 to 18°C. Gentle decanting just before serving is advised to remove any natural sediment. Now fully mature, this wine is ready to be enjoyed and can be kept until approximately 2034.
The Classic Elegance of a Great Saint-Julien Wine
The estate
Nicknamed the "Versailles of the Médoc" for its remarkable architecture and sumptuous gardens, Château Beychevelle is an emblematic estate of Bordeaux. Although the land was managed as early as the Middle Ages, the estate itself was founded in 1565 with the construction of the residence. Its name comes from the maritime legend "baisse voile" ("lower the sail"), paying tribute to the Duke of Épernon. Today, this Fourth Growth of the 1855 Classification spans 250 hectares and belongs to the company Grands Millésimes de France, jointly owned by the Castel and Suntory groups.
The vineyard
Located at the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, the vineyard covers 90 hectares. The vines, averaging 38 years of age, are planted at high density across two plateaus of deep Garonne gravel, which promote excellent drainage and optimal root growth. The estate is part of a mosaic of landscapes including meadows and forests, fostering rich biodiversity. Committed to a pioneering environmental approach, the estate practises certified sustainable viticulture, strictly limiting inputs and favouring organic fertilisers.
The vintage
Regarded as a classic year in the Médoc, this vintage benefited from climatic conditions that allowed the grapes to reach sufficient ripeness. Without the extreme heat of very sun-drenched years, a regular growing cycle led to a healthy harvest, producing grapes with a fine natural balance rather than intense concentration.
Winemaking and aging
For Château Beychevelle 1994, the winemaking practices reflect the purest Médoc classicism. Following traditional fermentation in vats, the wine undergoes careful aging of around 18 months in oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood renewed by 70%. This method allows the aromas to be subtly integrated while preserving the elegance of the fruit, before bottling directly at the estate.
Grape varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (3%).
