Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This is solid, with brambly grip running in lockstep with a solid core of plum and black currant preserve flavors. Shows ample energy through the finish, where alder and tobacco notes check in. Not as dense as the top examples, but delivers terrific fruit and expression. Best from 2020 through 2030. 5,833 cases made.

92–94. Barrel Sample. This is a dense wine, one with a grand sense of balance and fruitiness. The smoky flavors complement both the tannins and the ripe blackberry fruits. It is a fine wine, showing both pleasant structure and great fruit character.

Decanter

Fairly closed on the nose, followed by some earthy aspects on the attack - it is markedly less overworked than some. You feel there is land here and the grapes come from it, not just piped in by glove-wearing beauties. There is tension and grip on the finish, and a joyfulness to the Cabernet-dominated black fruits. Certified organic, the estate is currently converting to biodynamic certification. 40% new oak.

This has an array of very assertive dark berries and plums with graphite and cedary oak. The palate is more muscular here. More assertive firmness to the tannins. Give it time. Try from 2023.

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Very lifted nose. A bit soupy. Lacks freshness. But you could enjoy it in the short term. (JR)

The 2015 Ferrière is terrific. Black cherry, plum, lavender and spice give the 2015 its super distinctive dark profile. Juicy and generous on the palate, the 2015 has developed into a very nice Margaux that plays on the darker end of the fruit spectrum. The 2015 is dense and powerful, but also impeccably balanced.

The best wine I have ever tasted here. Medium bodied, finesse in style with fresh, sweet, ripe red berries, spice and dusty, cherry finish, with a hint of dust in the tannins.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim, fresh plums, sweet cherries with an undertone of dark berry confit, subtle vegetal nuances. Fresh, some rustic leafiness at the core, salty nuances, medium complexity. Lemon touch on the finish.

An outstanding Margaux is the 2015 Château Ferrière which is roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Merlot (there are tiny amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc). A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a slightly lifted, black and blue fruit, scorched earth and violet-scented 2015 that offers medium-bodied richness, bright acidity, and ripe tannin. The lifted, slightly volatile note gives me pause, but there's plenty to like here and It should evolve gracefully for 15-20 years.

Dark garnet, quite saturated in the middle, ruby rim. Seductive, almost perfumed bouquet, cherry and wild raspberry notes, finely underpinned with herbal notes. On the palate with power, but also with finesse, the tannins are ripe, the finish aromatic. Excellent execution. It was less well received by other tasters. Tasted three times.

Deep garnet, fairly saturated in the middle, ruby rim. Seductive, almost perfumed bouquet, cherry notes and wild raspberries, finely underlined with herbaceous notes. On the palate delivering power, but also finesse, the tannins are ripe, the finish aromatic. A great success.

Velvety, full, suave bouquet, strawberries, cherries, cedarwood, dried currants. Dense, elegant palate with powerful, fresh fruit, fine tannins, dense structure, long, fresh, full finish. Can still improve. 17/20 2024 - 2040

Bettane+Desseauve

Still some firmness on the palate, but the colour intensity and body are characteristic of the vintage, with the potential to soften and harmonise over time.

94

La RVF

It displays a tight palate, still a touch austere, but with character and above all a very interesting finish that retains brilliance.

Le Figaro Vin

Dense colour with violet Nuances. Pleasant nose with fruit aromas, slightly vanilla. The wine is supple, light, a little fluid with spicy oak. A charming wine to enjoy on its fruit without rush.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark, intense and beautiful colour. Moderately aromatic nose, fruity, slightly lively and aged. Caressing palate, savoury, with a lean body, with hints of austerity on the finish. Medium length.

Description

Tasting Notes and Characteristics of Château Ferrière 2015

Tasting

Appearance
This wine reveals a deep, intense colour with ruby and garnet hues, reflecting its beautiful density.

Nose
The bouquet is particularly expressive, releasing intense aromas of ripe red and black fruit. Delicate floral notes intertwine with indulgent hints of cocoa, spice and toasted bread, derived from its time in barrel.

Palate
The attack is both dense and elegant. The palate reveals a rich, silky texture, supported by smooth, enveloping tannins. The balance is remarkable, leading to a lingering finish that extends the fruity, spicy and toasted flavours.

Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as beef fillet or rack of lamb. It also goes very well with lighter game such as duck or pigeon, enhanced by a mushroom sauce, as well as with mature hard cheeses.

Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this 2015 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. With excellent ageing potential, it can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2035.

The Elegance of a Great Margaux Growth at the Heart of Bordeaux

The estate
Founded in the 18th century by Gabriel Ferrière, this historic estate in Bordeaux spans an intimate 20-hectare vineyard. Now led by Claire Villars-Lurton, Château Ferrière stands out as a true benchmark. This Third Growth Classified Estate is distinguished by its environmental commitment, being one of the rare estates to hold dual certification in organic farming and biodynamics. The history of this château is also marked by visionary female leadership spanning three generations, shaping wines of great finesse.

The vineyard
Located at the heart of the Margaux appellation, the terroir covers 20 hectares and holds organic farming certification. The vines, with an average age of 45 years, thrive on soils composed of deep gravel resting on a subsoil of limestone marl. This geological configuration ensures excellent drainage and brings beautiful freshness to the grapes.

The vintage
The year 2015 began with a wet winter followed by a drier period, allowing water reserves to be replenished. The mild spring encouraged uniform budbreak, followed by a rapid flowering in late May. The very hot summer slowed down véraison, but rainfall in late July revived ripening. The water stress at the end of the season ultimately allowed for excellent concentration. Harvesting took place from 16 September to 2 October.

Winemaking and ageing
The making of this wine is based on rigorous plot-by-plot selection. Traditional vinification takes place in wooden and concrete vats, with gentle extractions and controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barrels, 40% of which are made of new French oak, bringing structure and complexity to the blend.

Grape varieties
The blend for this vintage is made up of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.
