Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Château Malescot St Exupéry 2005
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a deep, dark purple-garnet hue with subtle crimson highlights.
Nose
Intense and complex, the nose opens with generous aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant. This fruit core is enriched by notes of graphite, cedar and mocha, complemented by delicate floral and minty touches.
Palate
A silky attack gives way to an ample, full and velvety body. Supported by lovely, fresh acidity, the structure rests on dense yet perfectly polished tannins. The remarkably long finish lingers on delicious notes of liquorice, fine oak and blackcurrant.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with robust meats such as roast beef, rack of lamb or game dishes like venison stew. It is also an excellent match for seared marinated tuna or aged hard cheeses.
Serving and Cellaring
To fully appreciate Château Malescot St Exupéry 2005, serve it at a temperature between 16°C and 18°C after decanting for one to two hours. Blessed with exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be enjoyed until around 2035.
The Elegance and Depth of a Great Red Wine from Margaux
The Estate
Located in the Bordeaux region, Château Malescot St Exupéry was officially founded in 1697, when it was acquired by Simon Malescot. Today, this Troisième Grand Cru Classé extends over 28 hectares of vineyards. Currently run by Catherine and Jean-Luc Zuger, the family estate stands out for its environmental commitment and its minimal-intervention philosophy. Combining a rich historical heritage with a modern vision, the estate produces wines renowned for their consistency and their ability to express the full finesse of their terroir.
The Vineyard
With an average age of 35 years, the vines flourish in the heart of the Margaux appellation, on gentle slopes facing the estuary. The terroir consists of gravelly knolls over a subsoil of chalk, clay and iron-rich deposits. The estate favours sustainable farming, certified High Environmental Value, incorporating biocontrol methods and rigorous yield management to preserve biodiversity and grape quality.
The Vintage
2005 is recognised as an exceptional year. After a mild spring, the summer proved hot and dry, yet without any extreme heatwaves. These ideal weather conditions, which lasted through to the harvest, produced grapes of remarkable concentration, in perfect health and at optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for Château Malescot St Exupéry 2005 were harvested by hand into small crates. In the cellar, the philosophy aims to keep inputs to a minimum: fermentations take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine, which is neither fined nor filtered, is then aged for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels, around 70% of which are new. This process is accompanied by ageing on fine lees with regular bâtonnage and a single racking.
Grape Varieties
The estate's vineyard is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
