Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for La Tyre 2017 from Château Montus
Tasting
Color
A deep cherry-red hue with violet highlights lends this wine remarkable density.
Nose
The bouquet opens with smoky, mineral notes, accompanied by intense aromas of wild blackberry and blackcurrant. Aeration gradually reveals nuances of licorice, blond tobacco, cocoa and black pepper, enhanced by a subtle touch of truffle.
Palate
The entry is generous and structured, carried by a firm yet elegant tannic framework. The tannins of the tannat are remarkably refined and polished, offering a velvety texture. The wine’s richness is balanced by pronounced acidity that brings freshness and vibrancy. The mid-palate develops spicy and mineral dimensions, while the finish, of exceptional length, leaves impressions of warm earth, graphite and sweet spices.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs ideally with a bone-in rib steak, Porc Noir de Bigorre or Barèges lamb. It also matches game preparations such as roast pigeon or wild boar, as well as truffle dishes. Its structure allows it to pair with certain Asian cuisines with complex spices.
Serving and cellaring
Decanting for around 45 minutes is recommended before serving. The ideal tasting temperature is 17°C. La Tyre 2017 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve through around 2032.
A silky Madiran wine with lovely richness
The estate
At the helm of Château Bouscassé, a family estate for several generations, Alain Brumont acquired Château Montus in 1980. A pioneer and visionary, Alain Brumont elevates the nuances and identity of tannat, the local grape variety, through high-quality wines whose reputation quickly spreads beyond borders.
With their finesse, power and elegance, the wines of Château Montus are the pure and authentic expression of the finest terroirs of Southwest France.
The vineyard
The La Tyre cuvée comes from a ten-hectare plot located at the highest point of the Madiran appellation, at 260 meters above sea level. The vineyard is characterized by steep slopes covered with rounded pebbles over red clays. The southwest exposure benefits from prolonged sunshine and light breezes, encouraging optimal ripening. Yields are strictly limited to five or six clusters per vine, enabling maximum concentration. Manual harvesting is carried out in wooden crates, followed by rigorous optical sorting.
Vinification and aging
Maceration for La Tyre 2017 lasts three to six weeks, with controlled fermentation at 28°C accompanied by regular punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wooden vats. Aging on fine lees continues for 14 to 16 months in 100% new French oak barrels, giving this Southwest France wine toasty, spicy notes that integrate harmoniously with the expression of the fruit.
Grape variety
100% tannat.
