Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc exhibits a dark ruby colour, seductive, upfront aromas of raspberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with hints of caramel and wood spice, and a soft, round, attractive style. It is ideal for drinking over the next 7–10 years.

Wine Spectator

Offers aromas of fresh flowers and berries. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a delicate finish. Refined, with a lovely, silky length. Best after 2012. 3,000 cases made.

Still some blue here and a very pale rim. Very light nose and generally a rather casual approach. Not much attempt to charm the taster. Dusty and lacking juice. Furry edge. (JR)

Stephen Tanzer

Bright ruby-red. Aromas of currant, black cherry, liquorice, bitter chocolate and fruitcake. Silky and seamless but quite dry, with dark-fruit flavours lifted by pepper and herbal nuances. Finishes with decent breadth and fairly fine-grained tannins.

Medium-bodied, with a melange of peppery notes, cherries and herbs on the palate; this is fully mature. The wine was made by blending 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc.

Deep dark violet. Intense cherry bouquet, notes of coffee. On the palate, full-bodied; supple attack, with a firm, peppery raciness at the core and a compact, focused body. Better with every vintage; 2007 was a real surprise.

René Gabriel

Deep, dark violet. Intense cherry bouquet, notes of coffee. On the palate, full; soft contours on the outside, a firm, peppery backbone within; compact body. Nenin improves virtually every year and is a real surprise this year.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Nénin 2007

Tasting

Appearance

The color reveals a deep ruby hue with garnet highlights.

Nose

The nose opens with seductive aromas of red and black fruits, with notes of raspberry and blackberry. The bouquet also reveals menthol touches accompanied by nuances of blackcurrant, prune, truffle and chocolate. Vanilla and lightly smoky notes complete this complex aromatic palette.

Palate

On the palate, this wine is generous and fruit-driven, with a fine structure. Black and red fruit aromas are expressed in full, alongside flavors of cherry and chocolate. The tannins are integrated and silky, lending a velvety texture. The long, spicy finish reveals touches of cocoa and toasted thyme, with a pleasant freshness.

Food and wine pairings

Château Nénin 2007 pairs perfectly with roasted red meats and game such as venison. It also matches very well with slow-cooked dishes such as a beef estouffade or roast pigeon. Mushroom and truffle preparations, as well as aged cheeses, also make excellent pairings.

Serving and cellaring

It is recommended to open Château Nénin 2007 one hour before serving and to serve it at a temperature between 17 and 18°C.

An elegant, structured Pomerol from Bordeaux’s Right Bank

The estate

Acquired in 1997 by the Delon family, Château Nénin covers 32 hectares in Pomerol, north of Bordeaux. The 8 hectares of the plateau’s finest clay-gravel terroirs are devoted to the grand vin, with the remainder notably going into Fugue de Nénin. Under the leadership of Jean-Hubert Delon, the estate benefited from a complete restructuring from the time of acquisition, modernizing both the vineyard and the cellars. The grape variety mix, dominated by Merlot with an increasing share of Cabernet Franc, aims to produce an age-worthy Pomerol that is powerful and elegant.

The vineyard

The Château Nénin vineyard lies on the Pomerol plateau, benefiting from a clay-gravel and siliceous terroir. The soils are made up of gravel, quartz, granite and ferrous deposits that give the wines their characteristic richness and depth. This geological diversity allows for the expression of wines combining mineral complexity and fruity elegance.

The vintage

The 2007 vintage represents a classic year in Bordeaux, producing elegant, supple wines. The climatic conditions made it possible to obtain grapes at optimal ripeness, giving rise to wines with red-fruit aromas accompanied by notes of undergrowth and spice.

Winemaking and aging

Vinification of Château Nénin 2007 took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for 12 to 20 days. The wine then underwent 18 months of aging in oak barrels, allowing its aromatic complexity to develop and its tannins to integrate harmoniously.

Grape varieties

Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
