Decanter

The Louis Mitjavile estate that is rightly causing a buzz. Now almost a decade and a half under his ownership and fully into its stride, this feels ripe and textured, with the minerality and austerity clear in every step. Fairly powerful, tightly knit fruit, seductive oak traces, this is built to go the distance and has chewy tannins on the finish. Good stuff, give it a good few years in bottle.

95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample. Mitjavile stamp of rich, almost jammy fruit interwoven with integrated oak. Sweet, fulsome and gourmand on the palate but a chalky, terroir note adds balancing freshness. Tannins plentiful but well-knit. (JL)

The 2019 L’Aurage has a pretty, if rather light, nose of crushed strawberry and mulberry fruit, ripe but focused and infused with touches of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with toasty red fruit, black pepper, sage and tea leaves, and still that tincture of dried blood on the finish. Fine.

Earthy, dark red fruits with a touch of herbs, olives and forest leaf on the nose. Medium-bodied, soft, fruity and filled with licorice, black cherries and kirsch, give this a few years in the cellar before popping a cork. The wine is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 90-92 Pts

Purple with a dark core. Playful bouquet with a spray of violets, followed by plum, dark malt and fresh mountain black pepper. Mid-palate shows a slightly powdery extract, fine nervy drive and supporting tannins. Aromatic finish with blue berries, verbena and balsamic notes. An elegant Castillon, perfectly vinified by Louis Mitjavile. On the same level as last year.

One of the most sought-after insider wines of Castillon, owned by Louis Mitjavile, L’Aurage is just an awesomely delicious drop of Bordeaux, and a steal for the quality that you are getting. Expect blueberry and raspberry fruits, supple tannins with salted cracker edges reflecting its brilliant clay-limestone soils. The Mitjaviles are also owners of Roc des Cambes and Tertre Roteboeuf, and know how to deliver exceptional wines that sit outside of the traditional Bordeaux system of classifications and starry-named appellations.

Vertdevin

The nose is fruity and offers intensity as well as concentration. It reveals notes of crushed blackcurrant, fresh/juicy blackberry and, more subtly, crushed strawberry, with touches of crushed raspberry, a fine hint of crushed blueberry, and nuances of black tea, licorice, and camphor. The palate is fruity, elegant, and offers delicacy, lovely smoothness, and roundness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of crushed boysenberry, crushed morello cherry and, more subtly, violet, combined with touches of juicy blackcurrant and juicy strawberry, as well as hints of black pepper, cardamom, and toast. The tannins are elegant and structuring. Good length and persistence.

An opulent and fresh red wine from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

The estate

Acquired in 2006 by Louis and Caroline Mitjavile, Domaine de l'Aurage covers twenty-two hectares in the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Louis Mitjavile, son of François Mitjavile (owner of the famous Tertre Rotebœuf), developed his own style following international experience as a winemaking consultant. The first vintage under Louis Mitjavile's direction was 2007, and the estate quickly gained recognition for its wines combining opulence and freshness.

The vineyard

The Domaine de l'Aurage vineyard is located in Saint-Genès-de-Castillon, in the immediate vicinity of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils with siliceous elements at the bottom of the slope, a composition similar to that of Saint-Émilion. This amphitheater configuration offers optimal natural drainage. The planting density reaches 6,000 vines per hectare, favoring fruit concentration. The cooler climate of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux allows for slow and gradual ripening of the fruit.

The vintage

The 2019 year began with dry conditions followed by a hot summer marked by a heatwave in July. These conditions created significant water stress, concentrating the berries and developing their full-bodied character. Stormy rains just before the harvest provided welcome hydration, softening the skins and allowing the tannins to reach graceful maturity. This vintage thus produced wines of character with a particular charm.

Vinification and aging

Harvesting is carried out manually with rigorous selection of the grapes in the vineyard. After meticulous sorting, the berries are fully destemmed and placed in vats for maceration lasting approximately one month. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place under temperature control. Domaine de l'Aurage 2019 is then aged for eighteen to twenty months in new French oak barrels from the Radoux cooperage.
