Decanter

My pick of the Faiveley Grand Cru bottlings in 2018, although several other wines run it close: this is plush and textured but more refined than the same producer's Mazis-Chambertin. Two old-vine parcels have produced a wine that has coped effortlessly with the elements, marrying floral perfume with layers of red and black fruits and effortless concentration. The 50% new wood embellishes rather than dominates the finish.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is the most opulent of the four tasted from this vineyard, with ravishing dark cherry, raspberry and cranberry scents, and touches of tobacco and humidor. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, real structure and density, still quite oaky with a creamy texture that will be subsumed with time. A serious Grand Cru that will require several years in bottle, but mercurial and just losing some of its initial finesse with aeration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Description

A Grand Cru from Burgundy combining refinement and aromatic richness

The estate

Founded in 1825 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, the Domaine Faiveley stands out as one of the most emblematic estates in Burgundy. Since 2005, the seventh generation has been at the helm of this prestigious property, with Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve, two enthusiasts embodying the continuity of this family adventure. With a vineyard of over 120 hectares, the estate stands out for its exceptional scale and the quality of its terroirs, including numerous Grand Crus and Premier Crus.

The vineyard

Initially anchored in the Côte de Nuits, Domaine Faiveley has gradually expanded its presence to the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Today, it oversees a remarkable heritage, including 12 Grand Crus and 25 Premier Crus spread across Burgundy.

The wine

Since the 1930s, Domaine Faiveley has been the main owner within the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze appellation, thanks to three emblematic plots: the "Vieilles Vignes", the "Clos de Bèze Haut" and the "Grands Rangs". A true treasure of the estate, the Clos de Bèze covers 1.29 hectares of limestone soils and is home to vines planted in 1949, 1955, 1966 and 1983.

Vinification and aging

The grapes are hand-picked before undergoing a short pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place in wooden truncated vats, followed by a maceration of more than three weeks. Pressing allows for the extraction of highly pure juices. The aging, lasting 16 to 18 months, takes place in the estate's 19th-century vaulted cellars, in French oak barrels (60% new barrels and 40% barrels of one wine).

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
