Decanter

Lush, forward black cherry fruit and hints of rose petals. On the palate, there is a sucrosity typical of Charmes and less alcohol than in 2019. Despite its approachable nature, this is not lacking in structure and should age well. This is from purchased fruit that Faiveley farms and picks itself. The grapes come from a parcel of 0.81ha of old vines in the original Charmes section just underneath Chambertin. The wine is fermented with a good percentage of whole clusters and gently extracted.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Joseph Faiveley 2020

Tasting

Colour
Deep ruby in colour, it can darken to reveal subtle black cherry hues.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with generous notes of red fruit and spice, enhanced by delicate floral touches reminiscent of rose petals. With aeration, it evolves toward more complex aromas of undergrowth, herbs, and minerals.

Palate
The palate offers a silky texture carried by tannins of great finesse. It reveals delicious notes of black cherry accompanied by a sweetness typical of its terroir. The finish stands out for its length and precision, combining lovely fruit concentration with a persistent mineral backbone.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with feathered game such as quail or pheasant, particularly when prepared with a wine sauce. It also pairs very well with roasted or braised meats, such as beef fillet or lamb, as well as glazed poultry such as duck. Finally, it will elevate mature, characterful cheeses such as Époisses.

Service and Storage

To fully appreciate this Grand Cru, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 17°C, after gentle decanting for one to two hours. Built for aging, this wine will reveal its full potential after about ten years in the cellar and can continue to evolve gracefully for 10 to 25 years, or even beyond.

The Elegance and Mineral Precision of a Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

The Estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley has established itself as a true institution in Burgundy. Now led by the seventh generation, embodied by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of more than 120 hectares spread across the region's most renowned appellations. Combining respect for tradition with modernization, the estate stands out for its deep commitment to preserving its terroirs, illustrated by a full conversion to organic viticulture. It thus produces wines of great purity, reflecting authentic Burgundian character.

The Vineyard

The Charmes-Chambertin plot covers 0.81 hectares in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. East-facing, at an altitude ranging from 240 to 280 meters, the vines flourish on brown clay-limestone soils rich in iron and volcanic deposits, resting on a bedrock of marl and limestone rich in marine fossils. This unique geological terroir allows the roots to draw out a minerality and complexity that shape the wine's identity.

The Vintage

2020 was marked by hot, dry weather conditions. This climate caused beneficial water stress for the vines, allowing optimal concentration in the berries without tipping into overripeness. The grapes were thus harvested at a perfect stage of ripeness, preserving a saving acidity and great freshness.

Winemaking and Aging

The making of this wine is guided by a minimal-intervention philosophy aimed at expressing the full purity of the terroir. Under the technical direction of Jérôme Flous, extractions are carefully measured, and the destemming, maceration, and barrel-aging protocols are meticulously adapted to respect the unique characteristics of the vintage, thereby enhancing the elegance and precision of the cuvée.
