The estate
Founded in 1966 by Irma and Adolphe Ostertag with just 20 ares of vines in Epfig in the Bas-Rhin, Domaine Ostertag is now run by Arthur Ostertag, the third generation, alongside his father André. The vineyard spans 15 hectares across the communes of Epfig, Blienschwiller and Dambach-la-Ville. A pioneer in Alsace, the estate has practiced biodynamics since 1997 and holds 3 stars in the Revue du Vin de France guide.
The vineyard
Fronholz, whose name means “Le Bois de Corvée,” is located at the top of Epfig hill in Alsace, with a rare south/southwest exposure for the region. The approximately 40-year-old riesling vines are deeply rooted in a light, free-draining, shallow soil of decomposed sandstone, rich in heavy minerals, notably quartz. The lieu-dit is currently applying for Premier Cru classification.
Winemaking and aging
The Riesling "Fronholz" 2022 undergoes a long fermentation followed by one year of aging in stainless steel tanks.
Grape variety
100% riesling.
