Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Pinot Gris Grand cru "Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann" 2001 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Tasting

Nose

The nose opens with dominant aromas of flint, peat, and smoke, enhanced by hints of exotic fruits. A striking and highly distinctive aromatic profile, deeply rooted in the volcanic identity of the Rangen de Thann.

Palate

The palate reveals a structured and persistent profile, with a clearly perceptible presence of residual sugar that is destined to integrate harmoniously over time. The long and expressive finish bears the inimitable signature of the volcanic terroir: an intense smoky impression extended by characteristic spicy notes.

The smoky and volcanic expression of Rangen de Thann

The estate

Founded in 1959 in Turckheim, in Alsace, following the marriage of Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, the Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has established itself as one of the region’s absolute benchmark names. Its 40 hectares of vines are farmed biodynamically. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to earn the title of Master of Wine, now runs the estate alongside Margaret, assisted by their son Pierre-Émile. Zind-Humbrecht is unanimously recognized as one of the three greatest estates in Alsace.

The vineyard

The Clos Saint Urbain lies at the heart of the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, at the southern end of the Alsace vineyard, in Alsace. Planted on very steep, south-facing slopes, this exceptional vineyard rests on volcanic soils composed of tuff and greywacke, which give rise to the smoky minerality and distinctive spicy accents of these wines. The vines, averaging 32 years of age, deliver controlled yields of 36 hl/ha, ensuring the expected concentration.

The vintage

In 2001, climatic conditions favored the development of noble rot across the estate. Plots located near the river made it possible to produce a selection of noble berries, while the other plots gave rise to this wine. Fermentation then proceeded very gradually, reflecting the richness and concentration of the harvest.

Winemaking and aging

The vinification of the Pinot Gris Grand cru "Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann" 2001 was marked by a particularly slow and extended fermentation, faithfully reflecting the highly concentrated nature of this exceptional vintage.
