Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Wiltingen 2022 Egon Muller
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a delicate pale golden hue, adorned with subtle light green highlights, reflecting the freshness of this vintage and minimal oxidative evolution.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with refreshing notes of citrus, mandarin juice, and green apple, harmoniously blended with floral touches of white peony and a minerality reminiscent of wet stone.
Palate
The palate offers a remarkable balance between delicate sweetness and vibrant acidity. Orchard fruit flavors, such as white peach and crisp apple, intertwine with a mineral and saline framework, leading to a persistent finish of great purity.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine from Germany pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes from Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian cuisine. It also pairs perfectly with seafood, oysters, or roast poultry with stone fruit.
Service and storage
Blessed with excellent aging potential thanks to its lovely acidity, this Wiltingen 2022 can develop further in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2042, or even beyond for later-harvested cuvées.
The mineral expression of a white wine from Germany by Egon Müller
The estate
Founded in 1797 by Jean-Jacques Koch, the estate is a true institution of the Moselle-Sarre-Ruwer region. Now led by Egon Müller IV, representing the sixth generation, the estate is distinguished by its absolute rigor and very limited yields. As the only German member of the prestigious Primum Familiae Vini association, the Egon Muller estate is renowned worldwide for producing white wines of rare longevity and complexity, scrupulously respecting family traditions and the natural expression of its terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the Saar valley, near the village of Wiltingen, the terroir is characterized by steep, south-facing slopes. The vines, some of which are ungrafted and date back to the nineteenth century, thrive on very ancient soils composed of weathered gray Devonian shale and iron-rich shale. This unique terroir, cultivated without chemical fertilizers or herbicides, allows for deep rooting and gives the grapes an exceptional mineral identity.
The vintage
The year began with a mild winter followed by early budbreak. The warm, dry months of May and June encouraged early flowering. Summer was marked by intense drought, but the arrival of a cool, humid September played a crucial role in moderating temperatures and preserving the essential acidity of the berries before harvest.
Winemaking and aging
After an entirely hand-harvested picking and rigorous sorting, the grapes for this Wiltingen 2022 undergo gentle pressing without extended skin contact. The must is then cold-settled for twenty-four hours in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation proceeds very slowly, often continuing until spring, driven by indigenous yeasts, in traditional thousand-liter old oak barrels typical of the region.
