Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Elio Altare's Arborina 2022
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals an intense ruby hue, enlivened by garnet reflections that speak to a measured extraction and an extended ageing process.
Nose
The nose reveals a pronounced floral dimension, carried by notes of rose petals accompanied by fresh red fruit. A light, delicate ethereal touch completes this aromatic palette, a signature of Nebbiolo grown on the terroirs of La Morra.
Palate
The palate is warm and elegant, carried by fine yet tight tannins, soft while retaining fine intensity. The whole reflects great aromatic elegance and a silky tannic structure, characteristic of the estate's style.
An Italian Barolo of true floral finesse, the signature of Elio Altare estate
The Estate
Founded in 1948 in La Morra, in the Piedmont Langhe, the Elio Altare estate owes its renown to the modernist break initiated by Elio Altare from the late 1970s onwards, introducing short macerations and French barrels into a world then dominated by tradition. Now run by Silvia Altare, Elio's daughter, the estate farms around 10 to 12 hectares organically between La Morra, Serralunga d'Alba and Castiglione Falletto, perpetuating a philosophy of simple, natural winemaking that respects the terroir.
The Vineyard
This Barolo wine comes from the Arborina plot, a south/south-east facing amphitheatre located in La Morra, directly opposite the estate. The Nebbiolo vines, some planted as early as 1948 and others in 1989, take root in clay-sandy marl soils typical of the commune's Tortonian terroir, conducive to floral aromatic expressions and a particularly silky tannic texture.
Winemaking and Ageing
For the Arborina 2022, the winemaking follows the estate's consistent principles: a four- to five-day skin maceration in rotary fermenters, promoting rapid and even extraction of colour and aromas, with no yeasts other than indigenous ones used. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously, followed by around twenty-four months of ageing in French oak barrels, some of which are new. The wine is neither fined nor filtered, in keeping with the estate's cherished philosophy of naturalness.
