The Pure Expression of Godello on the Spanish Terroirs of Ribeira Sacra
The Estate
Located in Galicia, at the heart of the spectacular Ribeira Sacra region, the F. Algueira estate is run by its founders, Fernando González Riveiro and his wife Ana Delia Pérez Somoza. While the winemaking adventure and the restoration of the terraces began in the late 1970s, the official brand and the modern winery were established in 1998. Today, the estate spans around 30 hectares of vines planted on extreme slopes. The domaine is internationally renowned for its heroic viticulture and its efforts to preserve native Galician grape varieties.
The Vineyard
The grapes come from the Riberas del Sil sub-region, within the Ribeira Sacra appellation. The three-hectare vineyard stretches across the villages of Abeleda and Aviador. The vines, no more than thirty years old, are planted on terraces along extremely steep slopes at altitudes ranging from 200 to 600 metres. Facing east and southeast, they benefit from a continental climate with Atlantic influences. The soils are composed of granite, quartz and gneiss. The vines are trained using simple Guyot pruning, with no irrigation, reflecting a demanding style of viticulture.
Winemaking and Ageing
The grapes for the Cornamus 2024 were hand-harvested in September 2024. In the winery, the bunches are partially destemmed and then foot-trodden. Fermentation, triggered exclusively by indigenous yeasts, begins in stainless steel tanks and finishes in a 1,000-litre foudre. The wine is then aged for 16 months in 2,000-litre French oak foudres, on lees, with regular bâtonnage, in order to preserve the natural elegance of this Spanish wine through minimal intervention.
Grape Variety
100% Godello.
