Description
A fresh and elegant red wine from Etna
The estate
Located in the heart of Sicily, the IDDA by Gaja estate explores the potential of the southern slopes of the volcano. The name "IDDA", meaning "she" in the local dialect, pays vibrant tribute to the volcanic mountain, reflecting the strong identity of this 20-hectare estate. The name "Idda", a Sicilian word meaning "she", is a tribute to this volcano regarded as "THE" mountain, both feared and admired, which has shaped the history of Sicily for centuries
The vineyard
IDDA by Gaja oversees a 21-hectare vineyard spread across three plots. The estate owes its uniqueness to the planting of its vines on the southern flank of Etna, while many estates are located on its northern face.
Situated in the municipalities of Biancavilla and Belpasso, as well as on a site called Tartaraci, these vineyards benefit from a humid climate, high temperatures and optimal sunshine, encouraging an earlier ripening than on the other sides of the volcano.
The wine
IDDA Etna Rosso 2021 by IDDA by Gaja is an Etna wine crafted from the Biancavilla vineyard. Replanted in 2016, this terroir reaching 820 metres in altitude on very ancient soils still includes vines dating back to 1975. The label of this cuvée reveals two references, namely the red hue recalling lava and also the movement of the spiral, an ancient symbol evoking cyclical continuity and eternal expansion
Winemaking and ageing
Aged for 24 months in barrels and concrete vats.
Blend
Nerello Mascalese (98%)
Nerello Cappuccio (2%).
