Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Le Fief du Breil 2020 Jo Landron

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a pale yellow hue with bright highlights.

Nose
The nose reveals a fine and complex character, marked by aromas of elderflower and vanilla, accompanied by mineral notes reminiscent of crushed chalk. Iodised and smoky nuances also emerge, reflecting the influence of the orthogneiss terroir.

Palate
On the palate, this wine seduces with its elegance and its smooth, polished texture. A remarkable energy unfolds, carried by finely chiselled acidity and a salinity derived from extended ageing on the lees. The long, slightly bitter finish adds character and depth to the whole.

Food and wine pairing

Le Fief du Breil 2020 pairs ideally with shellfish and crustaceans, particularly oysters, grilled lobster or scallops. It also matches beautifully with salt-crusted grilled fish or preparations of smoked Loire eel. White meats, such as veal, also make for a harmonious pairing.

Service and storage

This wine should be enjoyed at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. It is advisable to let it rest for two hours before serving to allow its aromas to fully express themselves. Le Fief du Breil 2020 can be enjoyed now and up until around 2030.

Other characteristics

This dry white wine has an alcohol content of 12.5% vol.

An exceptional Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, a mineral expression of an orthogneiss terroir

The estate

Founded in 1945 by Pierre and Julien Landron, the estate was truly transformed under the guidance of Jo Landron, who joined the family business in 1979 before taking the reins in 1990. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Muscadet region, Jo Landron converted the entire vineyard starting in 1999, achieving organic certification in 2002 and biodynamic certification in 2011. Today, the Domaines Landron span approximately 45 to 50 hectares in the Sèvre valley, in the Loire. The estate is now run by Hélène Landron and her husband Nicolas Chaurois, who continue the philosophy of authentic terroir expression established by Jo Landron.

The vineyard

Le Fief du Breil comes from a six-hectare plot located on the hillsides overlooking the Sèvre Nantaise, within the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation. Facing due south, this vineyard benefits from optimal sunshine and constant natural ventilation that naturally limits disease. The soil, poor and shallow, consists of siliceous clay dotted with quartz resting on a bedrock of orthogneiss, a metamorphosed granite of Precambrian origin. The vines, averaging 40 years of age, are cultivated according to biodynamic principles, with yields limited to a maximum of 42 hectolitres per hectare.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage represents the seventh consecutive year of quality for the Loire Valley. The harvest, carried out around 16 September 2020, benefited from excellent conditions, yielding grapes with remarkable freshness and optimal aromatic balance.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes for Le Fief du Breil 2020 are hand-harvested with rigorous sorting in the vineyard. After direct pneumatic pressing without settling, fermentation takes place over two to three weeks using indigenous yeasts, with no temperature control. A light sulphiting is carried out after fermentation to prevent malolactic fermentation and preserve the wine's freshness. Ageing then continues for 30 to 40 months on fine lees in glass-lined concrete tanks, with regular lees stirring. The wine is finally bottled by gravity, without filtration or fining.
