Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Jeb Dunnuck

Leading off the Hermitage releases, the 2014 Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne sports a deep ruby/purple color to go with impressive notes of blackcurrants, cassis, charcoal and olive characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, it has excellent richness and depth, sweet tannin and a charming, forward style.

Decanter

An angular style of Hermitage, the tannins are quite pointed, this is all elbows and cheekbones, but it's enjoyably ready to drink now. There's a touch of plum sauce and berry crumble on the nose, which follows through to the palate. It's all built around brisk acidity, which carries the raspberry and Victoria plum fruit into the finish. A good vintage of this wine to drink now, it's harmonious and fine, though not as generous or complex as some recent warmer vintages.

Bettane+Desseauve

A fairly powerful smoky, bacon-tinged palate, with rich, tasty tannins; elegant and straightforward, a fine introduction to the hillside’s character.

La RVF

A lovely, refined aromatic palette, with well-defined fruit and no hint of underripeness. The palate is sound and honest, with no lack of cohesion. Overall, it is well made, with a certain sap and vitality.

The estate

Established in Tain-L’Hermitage since 1808, Maison M. Chapoutier today ranks among the very greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Both winegrower and négociant, Michel Chapoutier has, vintage after vintage, led this family business to the very top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are celebrated by the most discerning connoisseurs worldwide for their refinement and outstanding quality. A man of many talents, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by the American critic Robert Parker. His daughter Mathilde has now taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing more than 350 hectares of vineyards across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

Monier de la Sizeranne 2014 is an Hermitage wine made from a blend of different vineyard plots, laid out from west to east: “les Bessards”, with its granite soil; “le Méal”, with its ancient alluvial terraces of varying limestone content, rich in gravel and rounded pebbles; and “les Greffieux”, with its soil of silt and rounded pebbles.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes, 100% destemmed, are vinified in concrete vats at temperatures regulated between 30 and 33°C. Punching down takes place once or twice a day. The wine is aged for 18 months, 85% in oak barrels and 15% in concrete vats, to preserve its minerality and freshness.
