Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Origine 2022 cuvée from Mas Amiel
Tasting
Nose
The nose is refined and precise, driven by a spicy note from the Syrah, which blends with a more stony thread reflecting the minerality of the estate's schist and calcareous schist soils.
Palate
The palate unveils a rich, generous texture with a southern accent, while retaining great elegance. The Grenache Noir contributes a concentrated, fine flesh, the Syrah a spicy touch that energises the whole, while the Carignan, present in a more discreet proportion, refines the structure, and the minerality lends the wine precision and purity.
A mineral and precise Côtes du Roussillon Villages by Mas Amiel
The estate
Born in 1816 from a game of cards between a bishop of Perpignan and the engineer Raymond Étienne Amiel, Mas Amiel now extends over around one hundred hectares in Maury, in the heart of Roussillon. Led since 1999 by Olivier Decelle, the estate combines a tradition of vins doux naturels aged in demijohns and centuries-old foudres with a pioneering approach to dry wines. Farmed organically and biodynamically, it maintains a conservatory of old Grenache and Carignan vines on schist and calcareous schist soils.
The vineyard
The grapes used to produce this Côtes du Roussillon Villages come from old vines on the hillsides of the Agly valley, planted on highly free-draining schist and calcareous schist soils that encourage deep rooting. The Grenache Noir comes from vines planted in 1914; the Syrah brings freshness to the blend, while the Carignan, planted in 1952, completes it with its structure. Farmed organically and biodynamically, these plots deliver extremely low yields, around 16 hectolitres per hectare, and are harvested exclusively by hand.
Winemaking and ageing
For Origine 2022, vinification is carried out in concrete tanks, a choice that best preserves the purity of the fruit without marking the wine with oak. Hand harvesting and soil work using a crawler tractor or a horse support a minimally interventionist approach, in keeping with the estate's biodynamic philosophy, in order to deliver a precise wine true to its terroir.
Grape varieties
Origine 2022 is a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah and Carignan, all from the Mas Amiel vineyard.
