Description
The Concentration and Generosity of a Languedoc - Pic Saint Loup Wine
The estate
While the Bruguière family's passion for the ancestral lands of Pic Saint-Loup goes back seven generations, the story of Mas Bruguière began at the end of the 18th century with Antoine Bruguière. A native of Le Barou, he acquired land, woods and fields, where he began to cultivate vines. After phylloxera ravaged the vineyards in the 1870s, the estate was replanted from 1880 onwards and devoted itself exclusively to viticulture.
After severe frosts in 1956 destroyed all the vines, a vineyard of around ten hectares was replanted around the farmhouse and dedicated to the production of table grapes.
In 1974, Guilhem Bruguière and his wife set out to restore the prestige of the estate, whose grapes were then sold to a cooperative. After traditional grape varieties were replanted, the estate unveiled its first cuvée in 1986. Acclaimed by critics, the estate's wines quickly found success and helped raise the profile of Languedoc – Pic Saint Loup wines.
Their son, Xavier, now carries on the tradition with wines crafted with deep respect for the environment.
The vineyard
Domaine de Mas Bruguiere tends a 12-hectare Languedoc vineyard divided into two plots. The first plot faces due south beneath the Hortus cliff and is planted with old Grenache vines and with Mourvèdre dating from 1987, the youngest vines from 2015. The second plot faces north at the foot of the Pic Saint Loup slopes and is home to Syrah planted in 1980 on clay-marl soils. The entire vineyard is farmed organically.
The wine
La Grenadière 2012 from Mas Bruguiere is a Languedoc - Pic Saint Loup wine made from old vines planted on the estate's historic terroir. The Grenache plots grow on soft limestone scree at the foot of the slope. The Syrah grows on clay-marl soils.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand and transferred to vats by gravity. Vinification takes place in concrete vats. The wine is aged for 12 months in foudres (large wooden vats) and 6 months in concrete vats.
